We are very happy in Spain.Yes, we have had teething problems, the weather being one of them but weather is weather and its not spains fault.

The school travelling issue is quite major for us.

I know others on here understand what I mean.

We just dont feel weve found our place yet.Right country, wrong town.

Keep the advice coming. It is very useful to us.
Postman? What's one of those?
.... school travelling, well yes I empathise, but for me (at the moment) I'd rather trek from campo to city & back than have to live near anyone however I'm beginning to have misgivings about 7yo's lack of friends nearby to play with.
BUT and it is a big big but in my view, 4 weeks is nothing. Ok you've formed a view, but you've also not had time to make anything more than a few acquaintances, I'd have thought. Another thing is as someone else said, the area may be just about right, the house wrong - and for any of us, renting or buying, sussing that one out can be an expensive exercise.
Difficult one, but please give it a bit more time.

Valencia is a big and beautiful city, but you need to be careful with the large campo all around it. I daren't mention any names, it gets me into trouble, but it's some of the places frequently advertised on the internet at astonishingly low prices. There's a good reason for the low prices.

There is a large foreign population on some parts of the campo, and they're not from the UK.

Life is great.

But where we live is not perfect for us.

Lots of time is spent driving to and from school-thought this would be rectified partly by the comedor only to find out there is a huge waiting list so more driving every day.

OH wants to be nearer the sea and where more is going on.

Daughter wants a goat but she needs friends around her which we dont have here in the semi campo.

Mains water would be nice.

Just cant get parked in our local town.

Daughter is loving school and we dont want to keep moving her-its just not fair. Her school is great and she is the only foreign child there-I like that in a school.

We have to move before things become too settled as it will make it harder.

Thing is we just dont know where to go.

I personally love it nearer to Valencia city.

We say we are 50% of the way to where we are going-the trauma of leaving the UK has at least passed and we are in Spain now which should make it easier to find the area we are going to settle in.

But we dont know where to start.it will probably be renting with a purchase later on.

Any views on Gandia,Oliva or even Calpe or anywhere else for that matter but please not an area with too many brits.

The views where we live are stunning but I think a bit more movement around us would be nice but not to be in the thick of it-I still like a kind of campo feel but would like a postman maybe and know that emergency services could at least find us if necessary.

Any ideas?

Cannot help you with where to live - but I know where you are coming from!

People ask us in Spain why we did not buy in the campo instead of a village.

Simple answer we live in the country here, youngest daughter has no friends here, (all at school 30 miles away). Hubby works from home and can go days seeing nobody except the postie.

In Spain we feel part of the real world -
In our Spanish village we only have to put our heads out of the door and we are greeted continually. My daughter is out every night when we are on holiday (all spanish children who do not speak english, but they get on very well). We can socialise, have a drink without a car, have spanish and english company as we chose, walk to the shops (here our nearest shop is a 22 mile round trip away). The community have welcomed us, villages don't suit everybody, but good luck in your quest.

All the best to you in your search and if I can help in anyway just contact us.

Why not have a look to the west of Valencia City instead of South?

Not looking at south specifically.

What do you recommend.

Weve thought of looking at stops of the metro.

Quite a broad scope of areas id think.

More info much appreciated.

Some of the villages/towns are full of East Europeans.
You could always try Navarres as it has schools for all ages (no English children at present) a good medical centre etc etc & quite a lot of new places for rent.
It is also the centre of the Guardia Civil for the region, so crime is very very low & Valencia can be accessed via train twice an hour from Xativa our nearest big town.

back on my own account now.

yep, reckon we've sort of come down to earth now, survived the EPIC Journey here, got our stuff here, now we are in the area and ready to find our perfect place, oh what joy blind optimism is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

........and despite my gripes about where we are now, sod it, would much rather be here than the UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think la mujer has outlined what we are looking for, now begins the legwork and we;re positive, committed and hardworking people so I am sure with a bit of legwork (or luck) we will find our real spanish dream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

happy weve decided Valencia area, always been very impressed with it and whats on offer there. I know the mujer wants to vbe as far away from the english as possible (in a nice way!!) but i dont mind SOME uk influence, just enough to be able to walk away from if you know what i mean?????????!!!

definately somewhere outskirts in the tube line somewhere. I Know from Living in London, it makes a huge difference to life if you can get to other places easily and much as I like driving my (not any more due to the campo!) shiny (!) bmw, I've driven in central valencia (and tried to park) and its not my cup a tea!!!!!!!

anyone have any suggestions??????

As always, the answer from the horse's mouth is the best one.

I'm hoping not to offend anyone, but I know that when the EU expanded to its present 27 states, the poorer ones quite naturally used their new freedom to try and improve their lives. An avalanche of people headed for Spain, for obvious reasons and settled near the first big cities they came to, Barcelona and Valencia.

Fast forwarding to one small example, the Romas in Rumania are despised by their own countryfolk and headed west in droves when the opportunity arose. A large chunk of them are now in some parts of the towns and villages around Valencia.

Their lifestyle offends many local people, in the same way as the mostly Irish travellers cause havoc wherever they settle in the UK.

It's hard to find an area to live in that's perfect to our own expectations, but it's nice to be aware of the more obvious pitfalls before we pitch our tents.

Good choice of a shiny BMW in Aspe! Likely to get you noticed for all the wrong reasons. Do what my Spanish neighbour does - stick the car in the garage for the weekend and drive a normal car for work and school.

Our place is in Pego, and although we are in UK at the moment I am reliably informed that the weather has been just as dire there as anywhere else on the Costa Blanca. Powercuts, lightening strikes, high winds and driving rain ... although according to the weatherforecast today looks like the calm before yet more rain!

Why would we get noticed in Aspe when so many other people have the same car there.

And what are the wrong reasons-not quite with you.

We were incredibly lucky to find this left hand drive 2 miles from where we lived in the UK for a very good price.

And what is a normal car?????

I seem to remember that an expat couple in Moraira were targeted by robbers a few years ago, tied up, tortured, that sort of thing, (possibly even murdered, but as I say, I don't remember and don't have time at the moment to trawl through the back issues of Costa Blanca News), and it was suggested that it was because they drove around town in a flashy foreign convertible car, thus showing to everyone that they 'had money'.
I think it is being suggested that you drive a clapped-out, beat-up car like most of the Spaniards in order to 'blend in'
