What's the worst thing you've eaten by accident?

Have you ever received a free tapa, or ordered something you didn't understand on the menu? And hated it?

I ordered something in Cuenca once, and misunderstood the Spanish. What turned up can only be described as intestines wrapped around twigs.

It took a lot of eating tortilla, morcilla, jamon and gazpacho before my love of Spanish food came back!

Lambs Hearts and Kidneys, which came out medium raw. Needless to say I sent em back and asked for steak.

I can just about tolerate liver and kidneys (when cooked right), but they wouldn't be something I asked for. Given the function they do in the body, I'm always surprised by the fact they're meant to be good for you. There again, I love Morcilla, so it's not always down to where they come from in the body.

Ox Tail stew complete with the tail structure in a little bar near Girona Airport, not understanding the verbally delivered Menu del Dia. The soup and the pudding were not much better, on the bright side they didn't charge for the wine or the bottle to take back to the hotel.

Tinned salmon!

I have been veggie for 21 years and have never eaten salmon so when i accidentally bought what i thought was egg salad in a roll, i had no frame of reference when i started chomping into the roll. My eyes literally bulged out of my head when after thoughtfully chewing the mouthful for a few seconds, swallowed it just as my faded memory banks screamed ''FISH''!!!
I know it could have been a lot, lot worse but to me, its like a regular carnivore eating testicles or something equally repulsive. It made me feel very sick and put me off eating anything else that day (no mean feat i can tell you!)

Almost a fly  It had settled in a glass of port I had put down on the table. I was deeply engrossed in a good book and reached out for the glass without looking, took a sip and felt something on my tongue. I spit it out - all over my lap and book http://bestsmileys.com/puking/2.gif

The moral to this is ALWAYS put a coaster over your glass. I fully understand why tapas started, wonder how many flies were swallowed before tapas.

Two things come to mind, many years ago, I being an asthmatic use inhalers. One had been left in the side pocket of a tent we were using, I picked it up and inhaled began to choke as something caught at the back of my throat, much retching later I coughed up a huge centipede.

Second in a harbourside taverna on the greek island of Aegina, I had served up sea anemone, not wanting to lose face I attempted to spoon in the living mollusc, it can only be described as mucus covered nasal snot. It stayed in my mouth for about 10 seconds before it came back up! Yet the Greeks love it as an aphrodisiac.

I think my worst experience that way was in Hong Kong, in a dim sum restaurant where a Chinese colleague had ordered fungzhou. Sounds exotic doesn't it? Until you find out it's chickens feet in hot chilli sauce:blink:

The second worst was trying durian fruit. I was told it was a wonderful taste, it smelled like a dead horse that had the sense to die several week previously and tasted like someone had mixed onions and ice cream, with the texture of candle wax

I'm finding the food, bread and beer much nicer in the north. Real bread and real beer rather than bleached air puffs and gnats piss.

The worst I've ever experinced in Spain was in Cordoba. I thought I had ordered oxtail stew with chips and salad. My Spanish obviously let me down. I got a plateful of crud topped with a couple of fat soaked potato pieces. All cold and accompanied by a piece of bread about Three days stale. €11! Total piss take. I didn't pay.

I've probably eaten worse, but I may well have been exceptionally hungry. These things are relative.

There's a bar in Granada that specialises in Sparrows. That usually horrifies most Brit ex-pats. I haven't tried them yet.

They seem to have Chicken or somebodys feet neatly packed in our Spanish supermarket.
Are they for making broth or just a slow chew?

They sold fried sparrows on sticks (with feathers) in the food markets in Thailand. We didnt partake. Im sure I ate dogs bollocks in a soup though. I never did find out what they were but I keep telling myself that they were prawn balls.
