Default What's the cheapest way to phone from Spain?

just got my mobile phone bill this morning (vodafone) and just about fell over....OK I did make a few calls over the 5 days but nothing that amounted to much! Unfortunately we do need to keep in touch for various reasons when we are away so I wondered if buying a Spanish sim card and putting it in an unlocked phone would be better?
I notice I pay to receive calls also? Won't be doing that again that's for sure £88 instead of £25!!

We just buy a Eurocard - €6 which gives us 300 minutes - that way I know the home phone bill will be rental and internet only - never use the English mobile to ring for the reasons you have just mentioned

Buy a Spanish Vodaphone sim for use in Spain, you don't pay to receive calls from the UK. The card Sue mentioned for 6 euro is a good one and also you could use skype which is a lot cheaper.

If you have internet access then voipcheap is great. You could use a headset on your laptop or buy a VOIP compatable phone which you just plug into your router, so doesnt even need a computer on. Voipcheap has various brothers and sisters such as voipcheap.co.uk, voipwise etc. The rates generally fluctuate a bit. But I basically ring UK, spanish and american landlines for free.
Forget Skype, its expensive.

In case Sue hasn't seen this - she is supposed to be working The 6 euro card is for use on any phone. You scratch the card and punch in the number. I haven't used one but I've seen my daughter using one on a mobile phone.

You can use it from a mobile, BUT, you get a lot less minutes. Best is to use it from a call box. There are other similar cards which give the same call time, depends just what the place is selling, you can also use them to call the USA for the same cost.

Thanks for all your replies - I will get a eurocard next time I am over.
Could I just put the number into my current pay monthly mobile phone, or would I need to use another with a pay-as you-go sim card?

Hi KK
This won't be the cheapest option, but in case you also still want to be able to use your vodaphone english sim, if you are on a contract you can arrange to be charged a flat rate of 75p per call you make, and then use your free mins.
However I think like you I will also look into the eurocards.
Has anyone got any ideas how many mins you get with a mobile?

Not sure but I think you need BB. you can dial on PC but use your own phone, so no need to buy one.
Dial on PC your phone rings then when you pick it up you will hear it dial the number, then you can talk for an hour for free to landlines, total cost 5 cents.
To UK mobiles 8cents a min Spanish mobiles 10 cents, plus 5 cents connection.

We use Voipcheap via headphones connected to the computer. Saves holding a phone to the ear for a couple of hours when I talk to my eldest daughter.
