Killers' plea to Euro judges means Britain could be stripped of powers to hand out 'life means life' sentencesKillers set to insist European Court of Human Rights allows them right to demand release from jail

Former policing and justice minister Nick Herbert calls for withdrawal from the court

Britain could be stripped of the power to give serial killers 'life means life' jail terms in a new showdown with Strasbourg.

A group of killers will insist the European Court of Human Rights grants them the right to demand their release from jail.

If the court rules in their favour, ministers will be forced to give 43 of the most dangerous serial killers and rapists behind bars in this country the right to apply to get out of prison early.

the article says

"The dissenting judges said denying a parole hearing amounted to 'cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment'"

perhaps the UK should fund the families of those these people have killed in an action demanding they be detained without parole due to the cruel, inhuman deaths they caused.

although the better thing would be to deny them public funded legal aid to make such claims.

I just read the article and I'm not sure what the fuss is about, it looks like scaremongering to me.

(a) The European Court has already turned down their case once. This is just an appeal.

(b) Even if they win the appeal, it just gives them the right to appear before a parole board. It doesn't mean parole will be granted. No court is going to set Rose West free.
