Re: What IS an Expat ?
Technically its a patriot of a particular country who leaves and becomes an ex patriot of their home country. But I guess you can call them an immigrant too??!

Re: What IS an Expat ?
An expat is someone that has left the country of their birth to become an immigrant in another country because they are fed up with the number of immigrants in their own country.

Re: What IS an Expat ?
Not a definition but some common traits of expats ... certainly too close for comfort on the residential oil and gas postings I have had. Not true in Spain of course.....well perhaps a few.....well at the bowling clubs anyway...
• Wearing clothes that most people would not be seen dead in whilst believing themselves to be “hip” and “with it”.
• Acting young with a reality that they are in fact a sad and pathetic old fart whose day is long over (if indeed it ever was. . . . ).
• An Expat is one who exhibits antisocial behavior and lacks any sense of moral responsibility.
• They are usually very manipulating and lack emotion.
• They believe they are the only person in the world and try to influence others into thinking the same way, preferably in as sick and amusing manner as they can..
• They lie repeatedly to gain others trust.
• They often try to charm people so they can take advantage of them.
• In a nutshell, An Expat is someone without a conscience.
• An Expat enjoys sleeping with anyone else’s partner and preferably their sister and mother as well.
• Having a capacity for manipulation is a typical trait of an Expat.
• They are glib and superficial, with limited self esteem or humanity.
• They can be quite shallow and have a lack of emotion.
• They don't feel bad about their actions, regardless of who they hurt.
• They are irresponsible and have no ability to truly love.
• Sometimes compared to Psychopath but the reality is much worse as they want to play with your mind before finishing you off.
The tricky thing is that a lot of Expats have learned to mimic feelings of empathy and compassion, thus making it harder to recognize them for what they are.

Re: What IS an Expat ?
It's not exclusively British. Spanish who emigrated to S. America called themselves "expatriados". But it's not as common I don't think.

Re: What IS an Expat ?
Expats are the same as those brave pioneers who drove west across America in their wagon trains led by John Wayne. They used to form a circle to protect themselves from the savages.
Expats call them gated urbanisations nowadays.

Re: What IS an Expat ?
Ah but there are still some hardy pioneers amongst us brave enough to take our chances living in isolated backwoods amongst the uncivilised natives of Spain's version of the Wild,Wild West.
