Re: What do you think you live in?
the ones in my block are 2nd floor with a bedroom stuck on top - so they are duplexes, although I suppose the bedroom is an ático

Ours is known as a chalet.
It looks more like a normal but attractive house.Brick built in the 80s with cavity wall insulation and no leaks.

I live in an adosado or unifamiliar. If I'm speak to my British family I just say "house".

Some Brits call their campo home a Cortijo, they probably picked it up from an Agent
Some friends bought a weekend home in Yorkshire, they call it an ex-weavers cottage. It is just a plain terrace house

Your escritura should describe the house.
We have a detached house in the Campo which the locals would call a "chalet".
On the escritura it is a "Vivienda unifamiliar aislada" which I would translate as a detached house for one family.
Estate agents call it whatever sounds the most expensive/desirable.
We just call it "home".

Strangely, my house should be called Las Molinas, or Casa Las Molinas (don't ask me why it's feminino, I've asked to no avail) however - Correos deciding we all have to have buzones notwithstanding - it isn't the only one called that; bizarrely all the (newish) houses within about 300m are also described as Las Molinas ..... So what's an adosado? Terrace? Semi? End of terrace? & did someone say 170sqm was too BIG to call it a cortijo? I'd have thought the other way round... we're about 230 & didn't think it was really big enough to be thought of as a cortijo!
anyone else heard of Lugares, or are they peculiar to around Malaga?

Actually it was prompted by your earlier post, I didn't want to hijack but have always found Spanish property descriptions slightly hard to get to grips with so here we are...

I think the thread has mentioned most of the types of houses, but here they are for your reference:
Piso/Apartamento = flat
Adosado = terrace/townhouse
Semi-adosado = semi-detached
Chalet/Casa = a detached house or villa
Cortijo/Granja/Casa de campo = a country house
Ático = a top floor flat
Duplex = A flat or house on 2 levels
"Lugar" just means a place. Dont know what other meaning it has regards to property.
