I would at least make a profit, unlike you unless you started serving halal to those who wouldnt touch it, without telling them

I see Gulf states as former colonies where men lost their lives needlessly due to the religious intolerance of people who would rather throw a hand grenade than sit down and talk.

as JLFS has the rightness of it all, this is just poking things with a stick to see what opportunities there are to..........
oh sod it
I was born and raised in the area, I went to school in the area, my family still have a business in the area, many of my family members still live out there..... what exactly are you trying to say?

Indeed it is, but as a percentage of total wet sales it is small. Less than 10% in my pubs. I suspect it may be higher in Spain due to the climate and the ability of the Spanish to drink coffee at any time of the day/evening.

I think the article is referring to the future travel plans of the increasingly wealthy Muslims not the current ones.

Exactly it is all a numbers game, and not forgetting a lot of soft drinks are not a stand alone, but sold as a mixer to the alcoholic drinks. So not selling alcohol also brings down the sale of mixer/soft drinks.
he biggest profit earned is on "infusions", a fruity tea bag that costs about 1 cent of penny, and boiling water.

And although it is a money spinner it does not do a blind bit of good in the scale of things if it is only a small percentage of total wets.

It is like all the people who think that places selling ridiculously cheap fry up brekkies are making up for it by the profit on the tea they sell.

For that to work they would have to sell such a huge number of teas that it is completly ludicrous, as most places have such a small seating capacity........

Exactly, the food is the key, so why wouldn't you offer halal? Lets face it, within the next 12-13 years a third of the planet will be muslim, shouldn't we embrace that?

Not that I know any muslims you understand, I mean why would I... but, if I did, at this point I would tell you that I have sat next to them while I tuck into a drink. You would be surprised to see just how tolerant foreigners can be sometimes.

What i asked is:

Would muslims be willing to eat from a kitchen that also prepares pork in all its various guises alongside halal food.

Surly this can be answered going into the tolerance/niceness isuues, cant it?

If you dont know the answer just say so.

There are parts of London that cater mainly for Muslim residents/customers. Edgware Road is the obvious example, but you get other areas such as Green Lanes (for the Turkish/Kurdish community). As well as coffee shops, clothes shops, restaurants, kebab joints, you also get sheesha bars, specialist sweet and nut shops, religious bookshops, specialist travel agents and the like. I think RM has a point, and there could well be parts of tourist Spain in the future that cater for Muslim visitors, the same way that certain areas are mainly for Germans, or for Brits.

You didn't actually ask that but in answer to that, do vegetarians have a problem eating veggie food from a place that serves meat? Good food hygiene is good food hygiene.

The report talks about people getting better prepared to capitalise on the huge wealth among the growing muslim population. Getting better prepared would mean people learning, being more sensitive and savvy, no?

The one thing I do know is that many Middle Eastern clients are very loyal and can really spend money, when we lived near Deauville we heard all sorts of stories about the Arabs at the casino there, their generosity was legendary and if I owned a bar in Spain that could accommodate this sort of sea change then I would want to tap into that market. Arabs will eat anything you serve them so long as what they eat complies with their religious sensitivities, the menu would hardly change, just the ingredients. Its a no brainer for me really.

You seem to forget one thing, both of you.

Just because a Spanish/British/Norwegian restaurant owner buys halal meat and other products, it does not make them able to cook the recipies using those products. Not good enough for most nationals of the muslim countries to eat there.

If I wanted fish, chips and mushy peas, I would not go to an Italian place, would you?

And if I wanted a nice Indian curry, I would not go to Pacos on the corner, would you?

Horses for courses, I have yet to see an English guy, who has cornered the Hungarian market in Spain (just an example).

So would the preparation of pork products in the same kitchen comply with their religious sensitivities or not?
