Re: Welcome to the future.
You dont know too much about Spanish history then, I assume
The roadside graves, the families turned against other, the general murder and mayhem??? Truly a real Spanish hero
I've never met any Spaniard here in 6 years or so who regards him as such and indeed the mention of his name can illicit a look of anger

My experience is rather different to yours. We're both living in a part of Spain that fought against Franco, and lost.
I need to be blunt or it wouldn't make sense. The rest of Spain supported a popular leader, supported by the elite of Spanish society, not the half French part to the north, or the inbred Camposinos everywhere else.
The top of Spanish society still raise their glass to Vivo Franco. and he's been dead for 35 years.

Franco really was a hero to a lot of the older generation. Attitudes changed as he aged and the new order came in bringing strikes, pornography for sale. Youth getting more freedom etc. Earlier this year there was a large tribute to Franco in a Madrid square (mainly elderly people) they sang the falange hymn and had lots of speeches. It is wishful thinking that he didn't have a lot of support.

Re: Welcome to the future.
I think what we have here is a failure to clarify terms.
There is a difference between "some people hero-worship Franco" and "Franco was a hero".
There are still fascist sympathizers across Europe and some very right-wing little political parties. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find Franco supporters alive and well in Spain who hero-worship the murdering bastard.
This, however, is quite different from Franco actually being a hero, someone to look up to, respect and admire. An idea which is obviously as absurd as it is repugnant.

I wish this link came from another source, but at least it's current (only a few hours old).

Re: Welcome to the future.
I thought that's what we were saying, that some Spaniards regard him as a hero However loathsome Franco was he did have a lot of support, although you won't hear many admitting it now.
There was also a lot of people who were apolitical, all they wanted was to get on with their lives. Villagers mainly followed the line of the local Mayor, landowners etc. I remember an old relative talking about the fall of valencia. She left on foot with her 4 yr old son who was ill with measles and had no option but to trample over the dead bodies. She said all they wanted was peace no matter who governed.

The Falangists/JONS got 0.01% of the vote in the last election. That's a pretty good indication of how popular Franquismo is now. Even the Andalusian animal rights party got more votes!

Re: Welcome to the future.
Around a third of the people in the streets where I live are Spanish businessmen who all come from northern Spain. Many have elderly parents living with them. They all vote Conservative (PP).
I've been to many a party at their houses and after the wine has flowed freely, and they're sure their doors are locked, they play the old music. I call it Franco music, but not to their faces.
As a foreign guest, I politely stand for their toasts, but I have no national vote nor much interest in their politics.
