Water Purifiers
Looking for recommendations for water purifiers.
Our house water is supplied from our finca deposito, which is mainly used for irrigation. It's a big enclosed tank, 300000 litres, so only gets filled every couple of months, but it's not completely sealed so rats, snakes or any other wildlife can get into it.
The water is crystal clear from the tap and we use it for washing, cooking, teeth, etc., but we don't drink it because we just don't know what is in it, so we buy lots of bottled water to drink.
Anyway, it's high time we bought a water purifier and have been looking at reverse osmosis systems but aren't sure about availability of replacement filter cartridges.
Also after looking at prices, they seem to range from 100 euros to 300 euros for a 5 stage system. Why the big price difference? Is there a big difference in performance?
My local Aki (Leroy Merlin) do a 5 stage system for under 100 euros. Anyone tried it?
Any advice gratefully received.

If it's clean water with a decent taste, the occasional chlorine tablet will keep it safe to drink.

The best thing you can do is get the water professionally tested. You will need a sterilised container from a farmacia and they will tell you where to take it for analysis.
You can then take the professional advice and install any necessary system

We use a 5 stage reverse osmosis system on our mains water supply, wouldn't be without it!. Our water was/is safe to drink but it furred up the kettle and left a scum on tea & coffee. The water from the RO system is purer than the bottled water and makes a lovely brew.
A couple of things to be aware of if you're considering an RO system.
(1) You need very good water pressure. The minimum quoted is 3 bar but this will waste a lot of water....Ideally you need about 7 bar. I would advise buying one fitted with a booster pump if you have low pressure. The higher the pressure the less water wasted in filling the storage tank. (Ours runs at 7 bar with the booster pump)
(2) Even with good water pressure the RO system uses about 2 litres of water to produce 1 litre of pure water. Some plumb this to the waste pipe, we pipe our, near pure, "waste water" to a tank for irrigation.
(3) invest in a TDS meter ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yakamoz-Digital-Tester-Testing-Quality/dp/B06Y2YCKS5/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=tds+meter&qid=1566078730&s=gateway&sr=8-5 ) This will give you a good indication when the filters need replacing. Test the water before & after the RO system, ours was 270 ppm dropping down to 6 ppm after the filter.
(4) The osmosis membrane usually needs replacing every 2 years and the 4 pre-filters need changing every year, depending on usage....IIRC the pre-filters are about €15 for all 4 and the membrane is about €30. These are readily available from the likes of Leroy Merlin, Aki, Brico depot, etc
