Watching TV in Spain!

Hi there! I'm a newbie! I am moving to Spain next week with my boyfriend. We both have jobs teaching English at a school in Lugo in Galicia.

I have a question! I had this plan to watch TV on th BBC iplayer, but then found out that I wouldn't be able to.

Just been doing some research on VPNs (Virtual Private Network) and some of the packages you can get for about £6 a month.

Does anyone on here use them, how reliable is it and does it work with wi-fi?
Sorry to bombard with questions, but I won't be able to cope if I can't watch Strictly Come Dancing or Merlin in the Autumn!

Thanks!
Charlotte.

A lot of people use Expatshield. It's free and seems pretty reliable.

Just make sure you have Adblock on your browser.

as Fred says, install Expatshield on ur pc and join many many others.

like the price for the vpn (any details) as my initial research was up to 10 times as much (GDY's wanting make a profit).
whilst you can use skype for your telephone calls if you may wish to consider "porting" a uk landline no which will cost £2\m and all calls would be over the internet.

good luck

As Concierges for the Spanish section of BE we would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Please let us know if you need any further help.

OK - thanks. I will have a look at ExpatShield.

Hi to The Oddities! This forum is good. It's amazing to see where in the world all the ex-pats are!

Hello and welcome,

You will not be able to use the UK version of the Iplayer without a VPN or expatshield or other "ip adress hiding software", as it is block for non UK users.

But, if you have an Ipad, you can get the free "Global BBC Iplayer" app, and subscribe to it for about 6€ per month (the UK version is free.) But this "global" version will not have the live channel on, its just an "archive" and "video on demand" service.

However, Merlin is also on Spanish TV... available in English also...about 3 or 4 months after its on in the Uk.

Another option is download it for free via p2p...using a torrent site like thebox.bz or uknova and a torrent client like utorrent...most programmes are usually available for download within an hour of them being shown on TV...and in HD also...which can be better than subscibing to a service which can buffer and judder during live playback....even with a good 3 or 6 meg ADSL download speed...and you can store them for later and watch whenever you want to...even stick them on a drive and (if your TV has one) connect to the USB playback port on the TV and watch them on the big screen....

It was launched a few weeks ago - which is the "Global Iplayer" I mentioned in my last post...and it is BBC WOrldwide, the BBCs commercial arm that is doing it. It is for Ipads only at the momemt. Costing 6-7euros a month. No live streaming of BBC channels, just a selection of past programmes "on demand".

We do not watch TV normally, perhaps 5 hours per year, apart from Wimbledon and a bit of golf that OH watches for a few hours each year.
We are however very hungry for all things Spain at the moment and I did watch the few episodes of Rick Stein's Spain. Someone told me that there was some cycling on ITV4 the other day that had lots of scenic shots of the Orihuela region.
Does anyone know if there is a copy on the internet that I could watch please?

its the Vuelta on at abt 7pm every night
there are a number of national cycle races, the last one IIRC was in Italy, now its in Spain, mostly the same riders who do the Tour de France, but there are some more local guys involved in this.
great scenic views, last night they were in the Sierras

The Vuelta is on Teledeporte, on SPanish Tv.
It is also on Eurosport (subscription on Sky), free (if you want german commentary) on digitla satellite (astra 1 at 19 east), and free and in english on analogue satellite tv (astra 1 at 19 east)
And on ITV4 on UK TV.

So what think you of this Mr Guy ?
Mrs Pub Landlady gets one over on Murdoch and the Prem.

http://news.sky.com/home/article/16082250

Should we all go out and buy a Greek box and help out the desperate Greek economy ?
Does it mean that Sky are acting illegally by trying to prevent subscribers watching it's programmes outside of the UK ?
It seems that there is still a fair amount of confusion regarding what restictions Sky can still legally get away with.

Coincidently I had just stopped my Skysport sub before arriving back in Spain a few days ago.
Whilst I can still get most big matches via streaming, I wonder what live footie is still available on the free Spanish channels ?

It wasn't Sky that brought the case it was the Premier League.
