I've decided to do away with my satellite dish and thinking of getting a VPN to stream UK channels when in Spain.
Should I set up a VPN on a fire stick in the UK and then take it to Spain or should I set up a VPN when I'm next in Spain?
Also, is the set up process straightforward?

If you are talking about a VPN just for stays in Spain rather than for full time use? I can recommend Whenaway .You can purchase either a weekly pass or a one month pass without having any ongoing subscription. A month pass on subscription is £7.99 or just a simple 1 month only no subscription costs £9.99. I used to use it when we went away for a month's break in Spain and it works great. They explain how to use it . Basically from memory you put an app on your fire stick they send you an activation username and password either for the month or week. You log in via the app put in the details and that's it you can watch UK TV via iPlayer etc with no time limit. At the end of your month or week depending what you paid they let you know it's running out and that's it or you can buy a further month etc. Yes there are cheaper ones on subscription but with this it's just for the time you pay for no further commitment. Worth a look as it does exactly what it says if you just want a month or couple of months VPN. Here's a link .

Personally I prefer a DNS service but then I use the Apple TV device to stream so setup is the simplest of things. A lot of people use dns4me though I use the getflix one.

VPN actually directs traffic to the server you're connected to. DNS just makes it look like you're in the UK but streaming then goes at the fastest speed possible. Both will work just fine.

Another alternative to VPN that’s been discussed before is Streamlocator. They have 2 offerings a hub and an app, if you are a Fire TV user the app works really well. I use their hub which is good if you are looking for something more permanent and for multiple devices. It just works and requires very little tweaking. All of the UK tv apps work seamlessly through this as well as being able to locate other apps back to the UK such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky Go etc. Their support is superb on the rare occasion that you might need them.

If it's not a VPN then it's a DNS service which personally I think is a lot better. :)

They usually allow you to set things up so that you can access both UK and Australian tv apps without having to change any settings (a VPN would need to disconnect and reconnect to another country), and it's worth having access to both because the Aussie tv apps have loads of UK content as well.

Personally I've stopped paying for Netflix because I don't see the point any more. I still have a few paid subscriptions going for various reasons (some simply because the deal is too good to pass down...), but overall the likes of BBC or ITV have more quality content than most of the more popular streaming services...

Warning! I use, on recommendation, nordvpn. I connect to either london or edinburgh servers BUT while i can watch most of the other channels i cannot watch live bbc. Strangely it sometimes allows me to watch older programmmes. Iplayer must be getting clever...

If you have family back home in the UK then you can check out the Apple TV and the Tailscale app that apparently allows you to create your own VPN-like connection.

So essentially you would be going through their home network (IP and all...) so basically ALL channels will work. To the outside world it will look like you're seated in the sofa of that UK property and using home internet rather than a paid-for VPN that is much easier to flag.

I use Surfshark and SmartDNS Proxy. BBC live works fine, with either.

Privadovpn plays BBC TV live at a fraction of the cost of NordVpn..

In the end I took out a 27 month contract out in the UK with Surfshark.
Have not used in Spain yet but on a visit to Norway it worked perfectly. Picked up RTVE as well UK TV, so should be fine in Spain.
Extremely cheap option if you have the internet.

Is SmartDNS working for you? I use their sister site Getflix and I've been unable to use UK tv apps for a couple of days now, though Australian ones are working fine.

I purchased Nord vpn last year it was so complicated to set up as I don’t have a computer (just iPad and iPhone) to set up the password security part. I cancelled it within a week.
i bought it again this year and I am so disappointed. It is simple to click between many countries with the click of a button instantly. I have had a problem with a few apps as they recognize it’s a VPN. I am not able to down load a Spanish supermarket app when logged in from Spain . I did read that it could be because I share my sons music and tv and my account shows his Uk bank details.
The UK VPN will not allow you to purchase lottery tickets and some other apps won’t work as it’s knows you are using a vpn and not in that country. Again I’m getting disappointed but sadly purchased a year. I use it on holidays etc so perhaps a VPN pay as you go would be better for me
