Visitors looking for something different to do !
I have visitors here on a short visit soon and they want to do something different this time ! Not into beaches, booze or sports. Are interested in wildlife, nature and ruins, architecture, history ( not so much me for last one) We have done the salt marshes and the Castro Marim Castle.
They mentioned a boat trip but I don't know anything about them. Is there a short trip you can do ? no longer than half a day and what can you see ? Some advertise lunch, what do you get and how is it stored/ cooked (sensitive tummy)
I have also heard they are all about booze which none of us are interested in. I will try and get to the tourist office for any info ( had no luck with them in the past, very Unhelpful in fact)
Just a thought are most started from Portugal side ?
If anyone has some useful suggestions I would be grateful ta.

What about the Donana trip by boat from Sanlucar, I believe you can go either morning or evening. The Rio Tinto mines is another very interesting trip from your area.

We have done the trip to Faro. The old town with Cathedral, museum etc is walking distance from the station. The trains are clean, punctual and cheap and you can get a pensioner discount on the fare on production of your passport, although this may not apply to you and you friends.
It gave us a different perspective on a trip we have done many times by car and fired us up to go further afield -not that we have made it yet!

Thanks for that, we did Cordoba by train when I lived nearer to Sevilla. Faro could be a possibility, I will check out where the train station is in VRSA and times before they get here. Thanks again.

The real train station is now the ferry terminal! They shortened the line by about 500 m and it is across the road and to the right behind the Cemitario. We did the trip as an experiment for public transport to the airport. It is doable but not for an early flight. It is a really interesting journey through house yards to start with then the Rio Formosa and finally between the mud flats, airport and marina. As pensionistas it cost us €4 each and here is the killer we could have gone on to Lisbon for €16 each return!! You could go on to Lagos but have not been west of Faro by train.

I started a thread on the Portugal forum re a trip to Alentejo and got some amazing tips
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=804221
Its not a long drive - but a car is essential.
You could also ask on the Portugal forum as well for ideas...
In Monte Gordo walking toward the casino on the pedestrian bit, there is a company that specialises in all sorts of trips, eg coach and boat trips. They have trips up the Guadiana and also sea trips on a boat with BBQ on a beach, visiting the coastline and caves as well.
We did the boat trip up the Guadiana from VRSA, nice day out and lunch was in a hotel so no 'boat food'. The hosts were very nice explaining all the local info and though drinks were available, no one abused it.... it was fun. I attach a photoshow I posted after... which also includes other towns nearby
Also a walk, attached, I have others if you are interested.
Good luck
Jon

If they are interested in History then the place they should visit is La Rabida just outside Huelva. There are replica's of the ships that Columbus sailed to America in and close by is the Monastery he stayed in whilst waiting to see if Isabella & Ferdinand would back him. You can then call in at Palos de la Frontera (were most of the crew came from) and have lunch.
A nice place to visit in Portugal is the church at San Lorenzo (just this side of Almancil on the N125). I won't go into details as, if you've never been there, it would spoil the surprise but worth a visit. Bryony

I was recommended a place very near Seville (not Carmona/Merida)... which had wonderful Roman ruins, but I forget the name. Anyone know? We were coming back from Jerez and were advised to stop there, but didnt eventually have time. The will be the Italica at Santi Ponce, great place been several times now.

I thought that was what you meant, Ayamonte to Sanlucar de la Barremeda is roughly 2 and half hours away from here, so best part of a day driving there and back. Too far in one day of a short holiday thanks though. One to keep in mind with possible stop over maybe.
