Pleading self-defence....21 against 5 none of the Spaniards were injured.

Gawd - it's taken a long time for that one to come to trial - I'd forgotten all about it.
I've seen very little of this sort of thing while in Spain but one I saw might have involved the serious injury or worse of a Brit if he hadn't been 'rescued' by some bystanders.
He was lying unconscious in the road being hit by bottles and boots by at least a dozen Spanish. He was dragged to safety in the bar we were in which immediately came under attack by a hail of bottles and stones.
I have heard is said that although it doesn't happen often, when it does they don't know when to stop.

That terrible incident cleared a few expats out of backward, inbred mountain towns in rural Andalucia. There is nothing romantic about living among those people as a foreigner, however nice the scenery might be. They resent you and your money and if you try and chat up their women folk they will do something about it. In this case, unfortunately, they went too far.

Truly amazing how brave they are when they're mob handed.
If they're not mob handed when an incident occurs, rather than wade in and risk their pretty little faces, it's off they go to round up their all their pals.
Much the same with the cops, one of them was taking a beating from some over exuberant protesters a few weeks back, they took note of the odds before running off and leaving him to take a beating.

When we lived down that way we used to visit Competa regularly. It was such a wild, unspoilt place, unchanged for hundreds of years.
If you dug deeper you would find that it was unchanged because it was so inaccessible, it was inbred because there was no choice of fresh blood and first cousins were the norm leading to breeding disasters.
Couple that with a lack of education and opportunity and you've got the baying mob who kicked to death the poor expat.
I suppose it highlights some dangers of excessive integration when foolish foreign ricos descend on Spanish villages and the campo with their SUVs, turn cow sheds into mansions with swimming pools and expect the locals to love them.
They won't and if you try and steal their women folk you're likely to get a kicking.
