I had a slingbox hooked up at my mums house in the UK. It seemed to do the job pretty well. Tho obviously theres a one off payment for the box. But then it worked well. I was watching TV.

2 years later it stopped responding and died. On my next trip back to UK, I had a look at it and it had popped. And sadly was now out of warranty! Grrr.

£110pa isnt too bad I guess for a hosted solution, depends on what channels you get. If you get any good ones like Sky One for example then could be worth it.

We use viewtvabroad.com and pay monthly - about £6 from memory. You can cancel at any time - you are not paying a year in advance.

Their service is good - we lost our service, emailed their help desk who promised a 48 hour response - responded in more like 48 minutes and gave us instructions to restore the service - excellent.

I have heard that you can download a program that fools the internet into believing you are in a different country.
That means you get access to BBC iplayer and the other UK tv websites for no charge.
You can also use the US ones who have similar services to watch the latest stuff before it gets to Europe.

There used to be lots, but as soon as the Beeb finds them they block them.

Yes, I believe they're called proxy servers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server

Good to hear that the BBC is spending money on shutting them down though. Why try to improve on their output when they can spend the money chasing expats instead? Maybe they're scared the whole UK population will move abroad to watch bbc tv from there?

The free ones are really bad - slow and unreliable - I know - I've experienced them.

To get a usable service you have to pay - maybe about 7€ per month - up to you if you think that's worth it. You will soon lose patience with the free ones.

That looks like quite a good deal. Make sure you don't have to pay up front and that you can cancel the monthly payment. If you pay by paypal this should be easy.

You can use something like foxyproxy which works with firefox I believe. Basically because the broadcasters do not have rights to broadcast outside of the UK they block you but I understand you can easily get around that with a proxy server. Proxy servers are used a lot in China, Iran etc where people do not have interent freedom. Also they are used a lot by expats just wanting to watch Eastenders:D There was a good program on Skynews recently where people said things like they pay thier TV licence fee in the UK and want to watch BBC Iplayer when they are travelling etc so they use a proxy server. The legal standing is that it is not entirely legal to watch these programs outside of the UK but the broadcasters don't seem to be too bothered about taking action. The risk is that 'anyone' could be made an example of!

I used Identity Cloaker which was few pounds a month but our connection was slow so spent most of the time watching the page load. When the connection was good it worked well:D
