UK Photo licence registration

UK Photo licence registration
I dont know where this eminates from, but I was just told by someone who is on Facebook that as from January all UK photo licences will have to be registered with Trafico, i.e. they will emboss your NIE no to the rear of the licence. This is so they can apply points to your licence apparently
Anyone heard of this, or is it another rumour circulating
They also said the fine for not having this done is €500

Re: UK Photo licence registration
Ive now been told that a lady was in Trafico this morning with a solicitor sorting out a fine she had been given for not having her licence endorsed with the NIE Number
It goes in box 13 on the rear of the licence it seems
Has no one got a person they can check with on this?

Unless they have changed the law recently, having your licence endorsed is voluntary.
It may be different if you have been convicted of a driving offence but it is still only an option if you have not.
It is EU law that applies here, not Spanish law.
That said, this is yet another uncertainty that suggests that the only sensible option for someone living in Spain is to exchange a UK licence for a Spanish licence.
If you insist on your legal rights to retain a UK licence then you only have yourself to blame if you have problems with Trafico - even if you are legally in the right.

Fred - I agree with you - if people are serious about living here as residents then why not change to a Spanish DL and then not have any worries - it is something you have to do at some stage anyway. Another benefit is having a useful (OK unofficial) ID.

Re: UK Photo licence registration
I'm serious about living here
I want to keep my UK licence and I dont have any worries
I dont have to do it at some stage anyway
It has served me for 6 years as a perfectly acceptable ID
Now, back to the original question ............

Re: UK Photo licence registration
Primarily, because I don't see the need to change it
I spend regular time in the UK, and i know I wont be here forever
And .... I have had to change so much of my life since I came over here that I choose to keep a few little things just the same as they were thanks. After all, I am British and contrary to the way some feel on here, I'm actually quite proud to say so
Why do people feel they have to keep badgering about something that I and others are quite within their rights to do is probably more of a question
(not a dig at you Fred :-) )

on his regular trips to the US he rents cars at a very good rate from a UK based company which will only rent to UK licence holders - he pays considerably less than he would from a US rental company
I've been reading a thread about this on FB too - there seem to be a fair few conflicting 'facts' - as usual different trafico offices/gestors/etc. all giving different advice

Why 'should' you change your licence if you don't want to and the one you have is perfectly legal, especially if you intend to return to the UK at som point.
If trafico or anyone else has problems with it, they should get to know the EU law.
Rant over.

I am genuinely interested to know if anyone has a specific reason for keeping it other than just the desire to do so. Car hire is about the only tangible reason that seems to come up.
As for potential problems with Trafico, I agree it's time they learned their own rules but after spending 12 years in Spain I don't see any sign of it improving! It's also not helped by the constant rule changes.
In theory, in only 14 months time, the new EU driving licence will start to be issued which will hopefully solve the problem once and for all - but for some strange reason I don't feel totally confident of that
