UK PAYG Mobile phones in Spain
Hi All,
I'm moving to Spain in the next couple of weeks and am currently weighing up my options.
I don't understand the mobile phone market in Spain so I have a few questions which I really hope somebody can help me with.
I'm thinking of buying a PAYG handset in the UK and bringing it over with me.
Would it be possible to simply use a Spanish PAYG sim in Spain on my UK phone?
If I decide to go to a contract phone once I'm in Spain, would be easy for the individual spanish phone operator to transfer my number on any spanish PAYG sim to a contract, i.e. can I keep the same number?
What are the best deals out there?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many Thank's,
Charlie

If your UK phone is not locked then you can use a Spanish PAYG card.
Yes, you will be able to transfer the number to a contract, even with a different provider.

Great Stuff, cheers for the prompt reply.
Is it worth buying the handsets in the UK or are the prices the same in Spain?

It's less hassle to buy a cheapo phone with a load of minutes on it in Spain. Unless you want something fancy they are pretty cheap.
When you get a contract they will probably give it to you free.

Handsets are a little cheaper in the UK, but you would need to have it SIM free which would cost circa £12 extra. As Fred says buy one when you get here.
PAYG unless you intend to call home a lot then you would be better with a contract or use skype.
This company deal in english, they are cheap but more importantly I have found them to be reliable > http://www.telitec.com/mobile/index.htm

Just buy the phone in Spain. If you buy a phone in the UK it will be almost certainly locked. You will have to spend money to unlock it before you can use it in Spain. You can get a phone + SIM card for less than 50 Euros.

Or less than 20€ in Carrefour, if you're happy with a very basic Nokia to get you on the road...! (with 6€ on the clock I paid 19€ including Movistar SIM) mind you it was for the youngest member, who doesn't want all singing all dancing videophone etc

Yep, I'll defo go for the phone/sim PAYG deal when I get there. I simply need something to get me started and I will transfer to contract once I get there.
Thank-you for the advice everyone.

Unless you are not going to use your mobile a lot, I would suggest you use your UK mobile until you decide what you want. The roaming charges are considerably lower than they once were see here > http://www.roamingsims.com/country/spain.php
