Morning, we are buying a property near granada, we are wondering if we should buy a tv in uk and bring it over or should we buy one in spain. We will be wanting sky tv also. Would the uk tv connect to sky channels over in spain etc. Also do you require a tv license? if so wher do you purchase them from?

yes a UK tele would work here

there is no TV license required in Spain

as for SKY - do a search on this forum for the many many many discussions about Sky

A UK TV will work in most countries - especially for any external devices that are connected tot he TV via scart or HDMI.
SO a sky box, other satekllite box, dvd etc will work.

The only issue with UK TVs and Spain was for the older analogue TV channels - where some UK TVs were not compaitable withthe analogue systems sound. Digital TV has resolved this.

Yes Sky TV will work in Spain. Depending on what channels you want and where you are going anything from an 80cm dish up to 2.4m dish will be required.

There is no TV license in Spain, as the "public" broadcasters are funded by taxes, mainly on the "commercial and private" channels.

If you buy a TV in UK, it will be cheaper.

If you buy a TV in UK, it will probably come with freeview which may not work here to pick up digital TV (TDT).



If you buy TV in Spain, it will cost more but easier to get fixed under warranty etc.

If you buy a TV in Spain, it will be probably come with TDT built in.

As usual, leaping on the back of another similar thread, but my oh brought a humax box over thinking it would do for our 2nd satellite (Astra I believe) to receive whatever free spanish channels were available... only to discover it's a freeview not freesat box. Doh. We think the area's now digitalised (?!) & though short term any spanish channels would be good, ultimately want Spanish tv but also to be able to connect the same tv in the same room to the other cable to our existing british satellite (ie to be able to swap if we choose).... will a satellite receiver bought here - I mean a spanish one - do the trick?

Don't forget that an english TV will come with an english plug on it. (Although that's not a reason to not buy it). However, I've never found an adapter that converts UK to spanish plugs that is reliable - the connections always seem intermittent. So I'd suggest bringing a 4-way socket strip, too, and then wiring a spanish plug on the end of that.
One thing to bear in mind, spanish electricity does seem to be "funny". Over the past 5 years I've had no end of electrical equipment just die on me in Spain. Numerous (3 or 4, I've lost count - both UK ones and spanish ones) cellphone adapters, a laptop, a spanish TV which literally caught fire, a computer monitor, soldering iron and probably other bits 'n' bobs I've forgotten about.
I would strong suggest that whereever you get your TV from, buy a surge arrester, or UPS and run all the valuable stuff off that. Although I *do* take my own advice and have 3 UPS's, but have still lost a lot of equipment, I am sure it would've been much worse without them.

Freeview boxes are designed for use in the UK for channels via the TV aerial.
You cannot receive Freeview in Spain.
Some Freeview boxes are able to be used for the Spanish TDT Digital Terrestrial TV system - again via a TV aerial.
TDT has been around for a few years not - but it is only now that the analogu signals have been swicthed over that peole are rushing arounfd trying to get Spanish TV back again!

Freesat is the name of a brand of receivers (and EPG) that allows access ott he free to air TV channel via the UK TV satellites - a sky box witho no sky card or a generic satellite receiver will also receive the same channels as a Freesat box.

There are only about 4 or 5 Spanish TV channels available for free on satellite (astar 1 at 19 and Hispsat at 30west)- and these are more local channels - like Telemadrid and TV Canarias. The main SPanish TV channels on satellite are only available viasubscription to Canal+ - Spains satellite TV service.

Fee Spanish satellite channels and what satellite they are on - al you need to do is make sure your dish is aligned and you have ANY free to air digital satellite receiver and perform a scan of the frequencies.

YOu MAY be able to connect your Freeview box to your Spanish TV aerial and use it to receive some of the Spanish digital TV channels

YOu can also daisy chanin receiviers to gether to supply one tv....1 scart on a TDT / Freeview box, to AV2 scart on a satekllite box, then AV1 on satellite box to TV...then whatever is swicthed on will be show on the TV.

When I bought (online) my new TV a year ago it was cheaper in Spain amazingly. It came from a place just outside Malaga and turned up nextday much to even more amazement!

i paid 299€ for a 32" lcd with tdt in, hdmi, 2 scart, etc etc. extra 20€for 2 years extra guarantee, so it has 4 years replace with new. that was from carrefour.

it was that or get my 42" fixed for 250€ .. er.. no.. lol

Not "excited" as such... If I wanted that I would just walk down Las Ramblas in Barcelona late at night...
