Yes I am aware of that as I too will get no where near what the quoted single tier pension is due to having government pension. The level of pension wasn't my point though, that was that with the single tier pension if you have less than 10 years NI contributions then you do not have an entitlement to state pension. The OP asked about recent changes that is one. From what the OP says they do have over the 10 years NI contributions. Of course many will have that even if never worked but on benefit as that pays their NI or women with children as they get an entitlement of NI contributions to count (12 years I think).

It's very confusing. When I "retired" I had 34 years contributions and the number of years for a full pension was 30. So in theory I was OK and the forcasts I had since indicate that. However now I'm unsure if the raise to 35 years actually is relevant to me (and therefore I need to pay an additional year) or not. DWP is a nightmare to deal with. I can only request another forcast, which probably not be 100% clear!

My wife had exactly the same problem the forecast they kept sending her applied to needing 30 years contributions. However it was known that they were increasing it to require more years. They started issuing forecasts on the new 35 year basis last year. The whole thing has gone up and down like a yo yo. It was 44 years then Gordon Brown dropped it to 30 years and now a few years later gone up to 35. I would guess that if you are not currently drawing the state pension and below 35 years you will have to make that up? If you also have any form of government or private pension I would check out what the benefit would be against what you may pay. As I have government pensions my forecast reduces my future state pension by £32 or so per week and I will basicly get what the basic state pension is at today's rate.

I have 7 years govt pension, and yes I have private too. Trying to get an accurate forecast will be a bit of a nightmare, I'm guessing

I wouldn't think it should too difficult. They just take off the years you were contracted out. You may well have SERP's to add on which may bring your pension back up a bit.
