Trouble with PO Boxes
In Mojácar, we've been told that letters which are incorrectly addressed will not be delivered to PO Boxes and will be returned or, presumably, destroyed. The Correos tells us that only letters to the 'titular' will be delivered and if other names are using the same box, they must pay a premium for each name used and listed. The obvious confusion between Bobby Black and Robert Alfred Black Esquire notwithstanding. Wives extra.
The Mojácar postmaster says this happens all across Spain, not just in his post office. He also admitted to 'returning' 2000 letters recently.
Susie Mandrake has been on this for a while and has a plea and a petition here. Thanks

Re: Trouble with PO Boxes
I was told by Correos that they put them in the "Lista de Correos" pile like all other undeliverable post. They stay there for a period of days - I'm not sure if it's 15 or 30.
A lot depends on the local postmaster. In our small Correos we don't bother to pay the extra for two names and everything is put in our box including post that doesn't have the PO box number on it.

The simplest way around it is to ensure that any other user always puts the box holders name at the top of the address, then possibly uses his/her own initials or codeword in brackets after or below it, which the postal guys won't have a clue to what they refer.

Re: Trouble with PO Boxes
This is weird. We have a mailbox on the gate post but the post lady refuses to use it even though she drives past it! We had to get a post box on the outside wall of the village social centre and she delivers there. This was given to us by the village mayor, no payment he just handed over a key.
There are 30 boxes here and each has the addressee's name on it. So as long as the letters has our name on it, the area code for the village and the village name we get post.

Re: Trouble with PO Boxes
This happened here a couple of years ago. No post for ages and found it all down at Correos. Some had also been returned. I was so annoyed. Things seem to have gone back to normal now. With the price of stamps etc it is appalling behaviour.

All your mail is put in the box including notifications if you have a package that won't fit in the box.
It's an absolute rip-off - they won't deliver to you because you are not living close enough to the post office so they charge you extra to collect it. Now they are trying to charge even more if there is more than one name using that box.

Our son who is 3 years old lost a lot of his birthday cards because the were addressed to him and not us. We got rid of the box after that...

Re: Trouble with PO Boxes
we had a letter confirming house insurance that was returned to Linear Direct because the postie didn't want to deliver it. They sent an email asking us to confirm if the insurance was needed - but we had paid for it, so who wouldn't want it

No, these are the official PO boxes from Correos situated in the local Correos office. They cost about €60 a year and another €30 or so for each other name on the box.

Re: Trouble with PO Boxes
There's a wall of PO boxes just down the road from my mate's villa, I couldn't help noticing from his terrace that there was always an inordinate amount of guys, seemingly checking their mail boxes, late mornings and early evenings. Human nature got the better of me and off I toddled when the next queue started, there was a very fit totally naked blond woman sunbathing next to her pool, situated across the road from the mail boxes.

we alwyas used one of the private mail box firms, as there were no Correos boxes available where we were, they were excellent, took in parcels as well, and you could send letters etc to the UK from there, they took the letter and payment, and it went to the UK by courier where it was stamped with a first class stamp, always delivered to a UK address within 48 hours.

Re: Trouble with PO Boxes
Around 3 years ago we were transferred from our own postbox to a "bank" of post boxes about a 2 minute walk up the road, we were charged a one of fee by Correos of €70 for the box, we had a six month period were they would deliver too the old and new box, after that if the post did not have a box number on it there was no delivery. To be fair it all seamed quite organised, we will now get mail addressed to anyone as long as it has our box number, if it's to big they leave a card for us to collect it at the office
