Jeez that looks like Paradise compared to the old N.E. pits.

Those Nancy boys down in Yorkshire even had pit baths, no mucky faces there, probably had their own beauty salon as well.

Our guys worked lying in water in 18 inch seams, walked all the way home in all weathers only the whites of their eyes visible, then took turns in the same tin bath in front of the fire, up to as many as six miners in the same family.

By the time the last one climbed out, (priority went from oldest to youngest), the water was freezing and they were nearly as black as when they jumped in.

Ah, I can hear the music for the Hovis advert kicking in! You can't beat a bit of Dvorak music for nostalgia. ;)

I'm in central Madrid, and haven't even heard a siren. Could be over Atocha side I suppose?

Just read earlier posts on this thread and it seems some people have missed the point slightly. It's not so much about car parking spaces, it's more about already heavily indebted councils going ahead and spending €5 million more of other people's money on another pet project without actually consulting them on whether they actually want it. No doubt the project will involve brown envelopes , etc. The protestors have pretty much everone's support on this - it could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Exactly right, ad I see many more "events" like this happening.:goodpost:

Money that could be better sprent by councils, instead of a "brown envelope" deal, where the only winners are those directly involved in the tendering/construction,

Given all the cuts that have been imposed, and the promise of more to come, I can see quite a lot more street protests taking place. The average Juan in the street is getting poorer by the day, whilst the number of millionaires in Spain shoots up, more and more cases of corruption, sounds like a recipe for a bit more unrest to kick off.

I can see their point, I'd feel the same, forever we elect our Councillors to make decisions, some will surely be unpopular, but can't see that consulting the public on every issue, before making any and every decision will work.

Can't help feeling this would have been a better way (if feasible) of stopping the project.

All vey well stopping these projects, but I thought the construction industry had been hit hardest by the recession? Looks like some building jobs will now not materialise...

Indeed. People forget that Government should be 'for the people'. Now how long since the government in either of our countries have been transparently for anything but vested interests? I don't condone violence...neither am I against investment in infrastructure. But I am for real democracy. There's no real democracy around these days. People should have the right to express themselves. If there was any real justice or democracy it would be very difficult to whip up a riot. So think on, governments!
