Re: Trike in Spain

I have a friend who brought over a lorry that had been professionally converted into a horsebox and he can't get that put on Spanish plates at all.

I'm not an expert but I would guess you can expect problems.

BTW nice machine!

AFIK, it is not possible to re-register commercial left hand drive vehicles and I would guess this is why no for the horse box?

I would suggest you contact one of the many independent agents who specialise in re-registration. There are several who advertise in our local free rags. You will need to have an address in spain and be on the "Padron". Where about will you be moving to in southern spain?

I have seen Spanish registered Trikes around here so it should be possible.

Yes, but they may have originated here and not UK!

From the little I understand, if it has the original headstock with the frame number etc. and it is already registered as an Harley then it should be possible.

If it is registered as a Bill Smith special no chance.

Re: Trike in Spain

It is usually necessary to produce a Certificate of Conformity (or pay for a very expensive report) to register a "foreign" vehicle in Spain.

Bearing in mind that a tow bar fitted to a car that is not factory fitted can present a problem I think this trike could be a very difficult vehicle to import.

Yes but they are not "Honda" the conversion to Trike is by others and talking to one owner his was a bike bought in UK and the specialist conversion was carried out using parts approved by Honda sourced in Holland.

Much depends on how understanding your neighbours will be.;)

Hi

The short answer is "forget it" unless you want to spend over 2,000€ re-matriculating it.

Any modifications have to be "type approved" by either the specialist station in Barcelona or Madrid. Last time I enquired it was over 1,800€. And that was just the ITV. Think about costs of getting it there and back etc.

Sorry to pour a damper

... or you could always do what a lot of Brits do and this is to ignore the law and leave it on UK plates.

I know the trike will draw more attention but .....

Some people will say that the police are clamping down on foreign plated vehicles but I think it all depends where you are.

Where we are, there are still Brits on UK plates with no tax, no MOT and therefore no insurance but they've been that way for many, many years so why change ???!!!

I would never condone or recommend this action but there are still some that would!

I feel very, very sorry for anyone that has an accident with one of these extremely ignorant people.

Re: Trike in Spain

As Dxf has said, it's a long and expensive process. I too looked at registering a trike, but the cost and hassle (all parts need to be original bike parts...no "home made" allowed). There are trikes here in Spain, but my understanding is that they were manufactured here.
On a related issue, I attended a classic car meet last weekend, and virtually all the cars were on UK plates. Whilst chatting to a MG Midget owner about her insurance she introduced me to an English guy selling car insurance for foreign (UK) plated cars. He was actually writing a policy for her. But on trying to get more detailed info, particularly with regard to the legal aspects, our chat came to an abrupt end!
