Transport of Cats to Spain
 

We hope to be moving to Costa de Luz. Has any one any tips for moving three cats from the UK. Is it better to fly - if so which airports do you need to use bearing in mind we live in Torquay or is it better to go by ferry and then drive overland. How traumatic is this!!!

I flew my two over on BA operated by GB. I had a nightmare at LGW when I was offloaded (long story)

I went back the next day and all was fine. You check in with them. Pay the excess fee then a nice man comes and takes them. They are vet checked prior to flying. Just a cursory check and there is an RSPCA inspector on duty at all times to supervise things.

They are loaded into the hold and on arrival they come out on the baggage carousel.

My two were fine and I'm now flying them to the US and don't anticpate too many probs, though it's a much longer journey and a transfer.

Make sure you get their pet passport up to date and get a proper carrier. The one you take them to the vets in won't do. They have to be able to stand up, turn round and lie down. I wouldn't advise putting them in the same container. The airlines, vet and RSPCA don't like it unless they are kittens.

I know someone who has just done this a couple of weeks ago from Birmingham Airport, with 2 cats and they seemed fine. I dont know which airport you will fly to, but I know in Malaga the guy had to walk quite a distance and carry the carriers back on his todd, so if you come down to Malaga airport might be advisable to get a form of trolley to give you a hand. Depending which part of Costa Luz, Gib airport may be another alternative. (BA flys there) At least with flying its over and done with in a couple of hours, unlike ferry crossing and a long journey which I would have thought would be more unpleasant.

I've flown with a cat from Athens to Heathrow; that was OK. Then, 10 years ago, I shifted 12 cats and a dog from Kent to Normandy (in a car with 2 adults, a child and a baby)! The cats were banged up in ordinary carriers, nobody checked their very expensive paperwork and apart from being seasick (all the animals and the baby) everyone was fine. The cats strolled out onto "home" ground at the far end, stretched a bit and set about ridding the district of mice and shrews. Unless you have particularly nervous or high strung cats, I reckon you'll be fine either way.

How on earth did you get 12 cats into a car!!!! Also what happens with their litter, I find it all mind boggling!

The only person getting traumatic is you , chill out and bring them either way, they will soon get over it, as stlocook says.

Six boxes of two. They were too busy being seasick to worry about litter trays, but we let them loose in the car with a tray before we got on the boat and again at the far end, when we fed them too. The baby was far more of a problem!

glynis asked if anyone knew how much it cost's roughtly to transport 2 cats to spain. Can anybody elaborate on this for me as I will be doing this in October.

we brought ours in the car, 2 cats and a small dog. had them all jabbed and paperworks stamped before we left, the customs officer didn´t even look at them, more interested looking for stowaways.

the animals were fine, law states u must have a dog seatbelt, and the cats must be kept seperatly in carriers, and all three must be got out of the car and walked around every 2 hours, and all animals must be kept on a lead :)

I was referring to flying the cats over which was the question from Glynis in the first place. If anyone has any constructive help to give me please do and I will be thankful to whoever gives it.

Your cats will be fine flying. It actually cost me more to fly them to Spain than to the US.

I paid in the region of £500 by the time I'd paid vets fees and the excess charge. I think the excess was about £80 each. I've got the receipt at home if you want it.
