Sadly it is dearer property wise, both renting and buying.

but the area offers so much. At the mo it must be cheap renting in Manilva, Calahonda and Torrequebrada.

Los Boliches is fantastic but dearer

Consider it, this area is the Spain a Brit dreams of!!

I'll join Matt in a ((shudder)) .... you speak for yourself. Not 'a Brit'. I'd no more live in any of those areas than stick myself with pins HOWEVER we're here to discuss the OP's needs and there's a very relevant point in the last post, namely a visual impairment for half the partnership so in terms of the look of the surroundings it's up to them how they prioritise that (the appearance of the place rather than the disability).
Sounds to me like the best advice so far is look a little bit around Torrevieja for similarly Brit/beach/amenities type places with maybe a little less of the more obvious trappings of crime.

As I said, different people want different things in life. Some prefer a vibrant city, others a peaceful village.

Having separate, spare accommodation in our home, we normally get family visitors each year, not that we encourage many of them. For some reason this year will be a busy one for us and we are already dreading most of it. We've spent the weekend cleaning, washing and spraying; spraying for the brown monsters that appear every year, accompanied by the little buzzers that sting you.

Some of our visitors get dressed up in the evenings and go out to have fun, others appear in their hiking boots and set off for the mountains, some just drive down to lie on the beaches. The worst ones are the ones that just sit around, sunbathing.

As I said, different people.

I quite often visit Torrevieja and surrounting areas.

I know a lot a people both Spanish and English who have homes there either living full time or just holidays.

Despite the reports of high crime, I have never seen any and although the place is not the most beautiful to look at, there is a good friendly atmosphere.
Sometimes it can verge on nosiness, as everyone seems to know everyones business, but it is all done in a "caring" way, they seem to look out for eachother, and for the older or less able it appears to be an easier place to live.
The mass built housing is certainly a lower standard than the CDS, and the place is a bit delapidated and grubby, but the residents are friendlier and are not so hung up on what they have got/worth etc.

Most of the people I have met there through friends, dont hide the fact they they are working class, did not have a great deal of money, sold council houses, and live frugally but happily on their income.

And why not? There does not seem to be the bullsh**ers that abound in some areas of the CDS. Pretense is not the norm there.

There are probably thousands who want to get away from there, who are desparate to sell, and cant, but although there is so much talk about it, most of the folks I met there are happy with there lot, they see the bigger picture, they have friends around, bars where they go and feel welcome, doctors, hospital handy, their little terrace, they dont ask for much and although it is not for everyone, they have found their little bit of paradise.

BTW there is a place that does great fish and chips, called the In Place.
Full of people having a menu of the day, with mushy peas......

Whenever we visit there, I insist on eating there, fantastic.

It is a good place for the non job hunters, so for people with children it is a non starter, but for older folk, a good place to live, as long as it is in one of the safer areas.

There is plenty going on, and affordable eating places, that may not be the best quality but fit the bill.

Being on a limited income, older, not being able to speak Spanish, not looking for a job, Torrevieja, although rather shabby, fits the bill, and thousands of foreigners are happy there.

Sorry to be negative - I consider Spain to be still the best location for British people to go to live. However Torrevieja is without doubt the most appalling area on the Spanish med. House prices have totally collapsed. The property market is non-existent due to a huge oversupply of empty finished and half finished properties of all types. If you still want to move to the sun at any cost, and to be fair there is a lot of sun - then bid about half the asking price as there are plenty of sellers desperate to sell.
