Today is the day.....
when, assuming the NHS don't let us down, MIL goes into hospital for her operation tomorrow. 6 weeks of waiting for this, and we still won't know if they have a bed for her till 11.30, when we have to telephone the ward.
I just really hope it isn't postponed, as we are all ready for this...MIL is so psyched up and positive, it would be criminal not to be able to see it through today. will keep you all posted... Sally |

Re: Today is the day.....
Phewwww! Ok she is installed in hospital....stage 1 successful....hopefully, they will keep her there now and not find a reason to cancel!
We are going back this evening, as by then they should be able to tell her at what time approximately she will be operated on tomorrow. Thanks to everyone, your support is wonderful! Sally |

I think we should push the boat out here and have a cuppa and toasted crumpets dripping with butter whilst sitting in front of an open fire. After all it's not everyday the NHS manage to keep to a planned schedule, try and relax Sally everything will be OK MIL is in the best place now:wub: |

Re: Today is the day.....
Hi sorry not to have been on before, but yesterday was a long day! MIL went into thatre at 2 and didn't comeout till 7.30 last night. She is in HDU, we only mnaged to see her for few minutes last night, and so far we don't know what they did! No-one was available to give us any info last night, but we are assuming that the kidney was removed ....at least...yesterday.
Visiting is this afternoon, so we will hopefully find out more then. Will give the hospital a ring later to check how she is. Thank you everyone. Sally |

Wishing all the best to your MIL Sally

Re: Today is the day.....
Thought I'd let you all know the state of play......
went to visit MIL who was in one of those electrically controlled beds that raise and lower you at the press of a button. She was propped upright, totally awake, alert and cheerful! She has an epidural still working, so a lot of the discomfort is being masked, but hey! she's alive and well! I spoke to a junior doctor, who told me that the kidney was removed, that he wasn't certain what would happen next as far as the bladder cancer was concerned, but that according to her notes 'all went well'...so far! We were astonished to see her look as well as she did, considering it is less that 24 hours since the surgery....but she is a tough old bird, and a fighter! Stage one over, thank god. Now let's see how things go, but it looks pretty good so far! |

Re: Today is the day.....
Hi Sally :)
I haven't been on BE much lately, so I've only just seen this thread. However, I WAS thinking of your MIL lots on Thursday, and was wondering how everything had gone. Thanks for keeping us all up to date on how she's doing; it sounds like things have gone really well for her so far (relatively speaking, of course!) Please pass on my very best wishes to your MIL, and I'll make sure I keep checking back in to see how she's getting on. It must be a relief for you and your husband too, of course - it must have been a very tough time for your family. Let's hope that the news continues to be positive; it certainly sounds like your MIL has a really good fighting spirit  With all good wishes to you and your family, Sam. |
Re: Today is the day.....
Have waited a few days till I reported back. Yesterday I saw a junior doctor, who told me MIL had her kidney removed, but that the bladder problem was a different kettle of fish. He said that they intended to do nothing more to the bladder, that the original tumour had been removed as far as they could see, but that tumours could and probably would reoccur at any time anywhere in the bladder and as a result MIL would require constant treatment. Not what I wanted to hear! I explained our plans for moving, and asked a few more questions, which he couldn't answer, but he did promise to get the answers asap for me.
Today I went to the hospital, and within minutes of arriving the Cancer Specialist nurse arrived. Lovely lady! She was SO helpful! She said that the junior doctor was partially correct, but that there was no indication AS YET that further tumours would present themselves. MIL will need to be monitored by a hospital...whether in Sapin or here...as she said it makes no difference. She said once we are over in Spain, to contact the 'team' over here, and they will arrange for all her notes, CAT scans etc to be sent to Spain. She said that they are awaiting the results of the tumour they removed with the kidney and that, rather than wait the customary 6 weeks for a follow up appointment when we would be told the results, she will personally ring us to tell us the results as soon as they are available! I have found a caring soul at last!!!!!! So, we now have to concentrate on getting MIL strong and fit enough to start the flamenco when she comes over to you lot!!!! (Although that might be a little while, I CAN see light at the end of the tunnel) Valencia Tim: thinking of you and your family mate. Sally |
Re: Today is the day.....
Hi Sally,
Well that all sounds pretty positive and hopeful, doesn't it? Excellent news for all the family. The Cancer Nurse sounds lovely; and it must have been great for you to be able to talk to someone in such depth, and to feel so reassured by her support. So it's onwards and upwards for your MIL now, and as you say - it's a question of getting her fit and strong again. Considering the awful shock that you all had a few weeks ago, things seem to be on the up a bit now, which is great news  With your house sale due to go through soon as well, let's hope that the New Year will bring you good health and happiness. Sending you positive thoughts, and all good wishes to you and your MIL, from Sam. |
