I recall a tongue in cheek remark from the floor during a lecture by a senior member of the revenue. A guy asked if everyone's earnings were automatically paid to the revenue, and they in turn took their cut and paid back the residual amount, would the taxation be cheaper to administrate?

The tax-man waffled good style until the guy said that there would be no need for a plethora of staff because if the revenue missed anything it would turn up when the companies accounts were assessed, he also asked Mr Tax-Man what his actual function was, and if he would be required if a system of direct taxation was instigated.

The lecture continued without any further mention of the speakers function, but it makes you think, doesn't it?
