The tax program works out both options and you pay the option with the lowest tax total.

The OP has a UK state pension which normally is below this figure.
I know Fred it was taken a while ago and I bookmarked it but when I tried to open the page it was 404'd You are totally correct about the threshold,I just always take the stance that you should always contact tax authorities before they come looking for you.So filing a nil declaration might be a good idea given that more than one proof of residence might come in handy post-Brexit

Absolutely agree. It's just the difference between MUST (by law) and SHOULD (for various reasons).
