How can these people take cash from families knowing they would be unable to meet their obligations as a travel operator. The CEO and Directors of XL should be brought to book, Brokers warned us in the City weeks and weeks ago this was on the cards, Yet 15 minutes before going to the wall they took customers cash it makes you so cross they can get away with it. Not all will be refunded and most will be out of pocket. This is or was not a tin pot company 87,000 people are effected not to mention the 1700 Staff who are heading for the dole queue. Helpline for XL customers in UK: 0870 5900927

The low-cost airline EasyJet has offered stranded passengers a special £75 "rescue ticket" to return home to the UK.

Oops, posh, from the title I thought you were talking about Michael and Dawn!
Anyway with XL gone, no doubt Ryanair will be holding another one of its famous 'closing down sales' again

Do you think that they'll make them pay up-front for two full tanks of fuel and return with the gauges as close to empty as possible because there's a no refund polcy?

Read the comment by Michael Cawley - somewhat scathing!

Tui and Thomas Cook I think it was, were saying this morning that they were organising "hospital" planes to get people home, but were finding it VERY hard to find operators willing to do it "at cost"!

It's been pretty manic at Manchester Airport the last few days, so many passengers with no holiday anymore. I would have been gutted if it was myself. I know its wrong to be still be accepting payments upto the announcement but to announce it any earlier would have spelt the end of xl before they had exhausted all options to save the company.
This will definately be a wake-up call for the industry but sadly xl won't be the last to go bust.

According to SKY news CAA didn't realise there was anyone left stranded in Corfu ...... seems some have been there for 30+ hours in the departure lounge
Makes you wonder how effective this ATOL thing is. The MD of XL made a good point ... they might as well have paid the administrators of XL to use aircraft that were available to bring back the passengers (yes, I know some were clamped). They have to pay someone, so why not use aircraft that are available rather than leave people stuck for days and days

again fuel cost Tenerife - 09.09.2008 - Futura Airlines ceased operations at midnight on Sunday night and announced it intended to file for bankruptcy protection due to serious financial difficulties. Passengers on five of the company's flights from Tenerife were reaccommodated with other airlines, according to the airport. The company has been given until the week-end to submit a detailed viability plan to the Spanish government before a decision is taken on whether its application for protection will be granted. Several hundred employees are expected to be laid off in Futura's main baes in Majorca and Tenerife.
