We stopped using Sunflower oil some time ago when we found out that, if heated, it turns into an unsaturated fat. Now we use olive oil for everything, thank goodness.

However, there was that scare in spain, some years ago, when lots of people were poisened - and some died - because of contaminated olive oil that was being sold cheaply on the black market.

Nope, choose again! That was nothing to do with the oil, but was in fact down to excessive pesticide use on the tomato crop there far too soon before selling them.

The oil was completely innocent.

Olive oil is best for cooking tomatoes as it maximises uptake of the useful chems in tomatoes. Interestingly, the more they are processed, the more healthy they are, just like peanut butter.

Tomatoes are amazingly good for you and possibly one of the most important health/anti cancer foods that there are.

I just remembered the programme on the oil scare from a long while back, plus a friend just sent me a book on tomatoes and their health properties.

Plus I have one of those dustbin minds that retains all sorts of junk.

It seems that this oil problem is in other countries too, including the UK, The Netherlands, France and Spain

Re: Sunflower Oil

Is that the same thing, ie oil being blamed for the problems caused by pesticides, or a different problem?

Nope it is they have discovered a storage tank had previously been used to store fuel oil before the food oil. The source of this sunflower oil seems to be from the Ukraine. However the Spanish government has not said which brand has been affected or what not to use they have issued a blanket advisory.
It seems also the other countries named have not issued any warning at all.

That is good news, but I've gotten used to the taste of olive oil for cooking now so will probably keep using it.

Yes, I'm sure that's it. It was being sold as olive oil, that's where I got confused. The old grey cells let me down again.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also good for your skin...either taken internally or rubbed in the skin :)
