Default State Spanish Healthcare help

hi all, i will be entitled to State Spanish healthcare for 2 years when i move to Spain via an S1 form.
My question is what is covered under the state system? is it like Nhs?
does it cover for hospital treatment and operations? Random Gp appointments like the UK?
i know you have to pay for prescriptions like here in the uk. I have searched the net to try and find out differences between our Nhs And the Spanish system, but have come up empty handed.
help would be greatly appreciated.

Via the S1 form you will receive the same services as in the UK once you have taken the form to the INSS.

Prescriptions have to be paid for unless yoy are a pensioner in which case you pay 10% of the cost.

Also bear in mind that healthcare is administered at regional level in Spain so you might get a different service if you live in Madrid (where it is being privatised) than if you live in Andalucia or Galicia for example.

I live in Andalucia and you can book a doctor's appointment online, usually the same day. If you need a referral to a specialist it usually only takes a month or so, often less (for example if you have a suspected melanoma you will be seen within a few days).
