Default State pension from autonomo

I've been paying autonomo at around 260euros a month for nearly ten years now. I believe that this will entitle me to some sort of Spanish state pension when I retire (someone correct me if that's wrong).

I also pay into a private Spanish pension - more than the autonomo payment.
Am I correct in thinking that I can increase my autonomo payments and so receive a much higher Spanish state pension? This being the case would I be better paying all of my private pension into my autonomo payment.

Cheers,
Bill

It depends on how long to go before you reach retirement age, but generally you need to have contributed for 15 years to receive the contributory Spanish state pension. I think you also need to have paid something like a years contributions within the 10 years leading up to retirement. i.e. if you work for 30 years but retire at 50 you may get nothing. I can't remember the details though. Separate to this there is a basic non-contributory state pension which I think most people qualify for.

You can increase your state pension payments in order to receive a larger contributory state pension when you retire. Whether you'd be better off depends on your circumstances.

If you have also contributed to a UK pension in the past, you can add those years to make up the 15 year minimum for a Spanish pension.

It is possible to get a Spanish pension after only one year of contributions if you also have contributions in other EU countries.

I have been working in Spain for 7 years. I am 65 next year. I would like a Spanish pension because that will I hope allow me to get healthcare as a pensioner.
Can I BUY EXTRA YEARS from the Spanish gov to get me to the magic 15 years. I previously worked in USA so no UK contributions
Thank you for any help

Either form of pension will be subjected to income tax when you draw it the advantage of the private pension is that you get a tax rebate in the year you make the payment and you can be flexible up to a certain limit as to how much you pay in and flexible in the drawdown to balance your tax allowances whereas the Social Security contribution is a fixed amount.
At 15 years you will get approx 50% of the State pension entitlement assuming unbroken contributions over that period.
Regarding contributions made in other countries if you retire in Spain you have to process everything through the Spanish system and they will then contact the "other country " e.g. UK to arrange your pension from there. You can end up with several national pensions if you have the right minimum number of years of contributions. Tesco is right : "Every little bit helps"

Quite a number of countries allow you to buy pension credits. The bad thing is you have to pay up front and you can't then change your mind. So you don't want to be popping your clogs soon after buying. Try Citizens Advice esp for up to date advice. Your best bet may be the Covenio Especial.
