Spider alert
OK, so I'm happily painting away downstairs and I look in the next room where theres a spider on the coving. Its about 2.5 inchex diameter leg to leg, legs are red and black stripes, and it had a big body.
It didn't last too long to be honest as it was hit by a broom head. It actually looked like a small tarantula, but I guess it couldn't have been Any ideas? |

The name tarantula comes from a spider that is found in Spain, it lives mainly in an area around the town of Taranto.

No idea about that one. A friend in the Dordogne France was bitten by a Loxosceles rufescens this summer. Bad swelling and the Doctor said it could be even worse for children. It is a variety of the Recluse Spider commoner in the States. Anyhow, not you one as it is brown and dull.

Red and black stripped legs doesn't ring any bells but as others mention there are tarantulas here... and black widow spiders also although not as dangerous as those at the other side of the globe.
BTW, Most if not all people here are aware that we have scorpions also, the transparent cream ones can give a very nasty sting and the black ones generally in the north are not as bad although they do also sting. You don't tend to see too many in the south outside of Almeria and when you do it might be really small ones 'seen lots of these young ones in Mijas pueblo in summer'. I used to live in Campomijas and there was work being done on the plot next to where I lived, I remember coming down the stairs one day and there was a scorpian that was approximately 3 to 3.5 inches long with his tail curled back (much longer if tail was straight), now that is a large Scorpion for campo here, I can't even remember seeing one bigger outside of Almeria. :eek: |

Whichever, I'm not likely to hang around long enough to find out. It does make you realise how careful you have to be when you're out gardening. My wife is now checking every room carefully as she goes in .... she hates spiders! |
