Default special education

we are planning to move in the next 12 months to the valencia area, or maybe elsewhere if the right place appears! my query is that we have a daughter who has special educational needs, what is the school system like in terms of meeting special needs or is the mainstream the best route to take?? thanks

I've got a feeling (hopefully someone will correct me if i'm wrong) that there aren't any Special Ed in Spain. I don't know why I think that, something at the back of my mind. But I could be horribly wrong.

Is your child statemented over here?

Hope you find what you are looking for.

I don't know, sorry! I assume you have google searched for this subject?
Any books on amazon covering this subject? You can see the content and reviews.

Wish I had something to help you. Sorry!

Edit: What about contacting the UK society, for whatever condition your daughter has, and asking them?

Yes, home schooling is legal in Spain. There is an Association for home schoolers that was set up in 2002:

There is a special school in Denia but Special Educational Needs covers a wide range of abilities and conditions. You don't say how old your daughter is. More facts might help to narrow your options.

in my sons school they have specialist teachers that come in (whether this would be suitable for your daughter)

they also have frequent visits by a psychiatrist for other problems that you attend as a family

also they hold back children who are not making the grades in the exams which may benefit your daughter

my son also had a one to one teacher he went to while the rest if the class had religion,to help with his Valenciano and Castellano work for the first year or so - this was a big help

Good luck with that - it's difficult for any child to get the right school and learn the language. If her sign language is good, then she might adapt to another sign language easily.

Does she use BSL, Makaton or something else? I thought that many signs are similar in many languages and that therefore when deaf people from different countries meet they can communicate at some level more easily than a hearing person could or am I wrong.

I hope that you find what you are looking for for your daughter and that everything runs smoothly for you.

Good Luck

This was what I thought but can't quite remember why. I did Deaf Awareness training some years back and I think this may have been discussed.

Good luck again with whatever you decide.

Yes that is where I remember it from and from programmes on TV showing deaf people from different countries managing to communicate.

Mine was work based training and I also studied ´Issues of Deafness´ as part of my degree and found it extremely interesting.

good thought that, she uses BSL and spoken English, so you may be right she might well end up with good communication quite quickly!!
