Spanish supermarkets
Hello,
Quick question. I'm just wondering if Spain has supermarkets that are similar to tescos or sainsburys where they sell more then just food ie air beds and tents like some of there bigger stores do in the uk.
Reason I ask is I'm travelling though Spain and then go to Germany for Oktoberfest. Which im camping. Wanted pick up a cheap tent rather then lug it one around with me. Was looking at Spain to pick up a tent rather then in Munich where they will probably be hard to get one due to Oktoberfest.

I agree that Carrefour is great for that sort of thing but there are also Decathlon stores which are not supermarkets but sports places with good prices.

Re: Spanish supermarkets
maybe, but not when I lived in Spain, anything else though.. some of the stuff they sell just has to be seen to be believed, and some of the stores are so large, that assistants go round on roller skates if they need to change something.

Not seen them lately, but great entertainment for the old man while the Mrs is getting the goodies in.

Well any supermarket where you can stop for a rest and have a slice of pizza and a 1euro beer is alright by me.
I quite like the Carrefour.

As mentioned Alcampo, Carrefour, El Corte Ingles, Hypecor, Decathlon and even my old local Supersol had patio furniture and small tents. Leroy Merlin also.

I like the one-stop shopping experience (for most everyday things, anyway). Little boutique shops always have unique and interesting things, though.
Unfortunately, the big stores are few and far between, unless you live in a major metropolitan area. For example, there are 3 big Carrefours in Palma, just 5km apart from each other. So, unfortunately, we can't get to them easily. I reckon they need a lot of traffic just to break even.

Carrefour is great. Alcampo is also great. Both are far less expensive than the regular shops - which are still rather specialised here - one shop for TVs (which are often double the price of Carrefour or Alcampo), another one for phones, a different one for DIY, foods only in supermarkets, etc...

With regard to weekly food supplies they still don't compete on price with the bigger chains such as Mercadonna, though I normally prefer Consum myself even though it's a tad more expensive and Lidl are still good value for money, despite what all the shopping snobs say.

I do remember Carrefour selling scooters, but not cars.
