Spanish resident, non-Spanish car
Is this at all possible?
I believe that of you are British resident, you can drive a foreign registered car for a certain time in the UK (3 or 6 months maybe) while you get it registered.
Is it the same the other way round? If I, as a Spanish resident, buy a car in Germany or the UK would I be allowed to drive it to and within Spain while it was being re-registered or would it immediately be illegal?

Not according to the DVLA https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk
I would imagine that the same applies in Spain. The usual exceptions are when you import a vehicle that you have previously owned prior to moving to Spain.
Plenty of people import used cars into Spain but the general rule is that residents can't drive foreign plated cars apart from the reasons I mentioned above.
Hopefully someone on the forum will have actually gone through the process.
