Hola! Buenos dias!
Rosemary,
Perhaps you were lucky in meeting a gem of a person? Such people are generally humble (whatever the nationality). Humility is a virtue, and not easily practiced.
Regards,
Carol

This is the third or fourth shop assistant that has apologised and the assistant bank manager in our local branch has also been apologetic. As we are in a very Spanish area and the nearest beaches attract the Spanish and the French rather than Brits we never have any expectations of people speaking English.

But I'm sure they have expectations of attracting non-Spanish custom. Your average Linen Store in Eastbourne is not necessarily expecting a hoard of foreigners coming in (excluding the economic immigrants of course)

Re: Spanish people apologising

I have to say I am amazed!!!!!! Totally!

You guys are talking about Spanish Nationals apologising to you 'in English' for their poor English????

Have I missed something? Are you not in Spain? (whose national language happens to be Castellion, with secondary languages such as Catalan.)

Are you holidayers or people who have chosen a foreign country to live in?

Come on now......this is 2007...there is no Empire anymore, nor is there room in Europe for people who believe that they can get by with Enlish language only.

If you are a businessman then perhaps you can deal in English, however, to go shopping!!!!!!!!!!! Beggars Belief!!

I live north of Barcelona, not a 'holiday resort', nor a route on the tourist trail. Have been 2 years and I have to say that I am PROUD to be able to continue to take up the free Catalan lessons that are provided. This is a very proud culture and they wouldn´t give you guys the time of day with that 'English' attitude! Apologise to you? Whaaa...:p

Thing is they are all highly educated, much more than you might think! As you are aware there is NO social security for the likes of 'pregnant teenagers' etc. (They take their bumps home..but they have less 'bumps' cause they are educated.) The average marriage age is in their 30s. The average Spanish family is well extended and in close contact.....unlike the British social security system which rewards........everyone I suppose!!

If a Spaniard wants to progress they stay in education.....there is a big emphasis on English language at the moment...(aren't you glad)...

Before I get too angry with what appears to be the "shopping girls" I will end on the note that I strongly advise you all to deal with shopkeepers in THEIR language! You'll get better service for a start and you might also gain a little self esteem by being able to speak a different language!!!

My wife is Catalan, my 3 children, 13 down to 4 speak perfect Catalan and english despite only being here 2 yrs. Please acknowledge the Country you have chosen to live in by learning the language.

Regards
Stephen

Stephen I think you have mis-understood this thread, it is not about us shopping girls expecting the Spanish to speak English to us, NO, IT IS MORE LIKE THAT THEY WANT TO SPEAK ENGLISH TO US AND FOR SOME UNKOWN REASON THESE LOVELY PEOPLE FEEL THEY HAVE TO APOLIGISE FOR IT.. May be you should re-read what had been wwritten I for one can tell you that a lot of shop assistants in this area of Spain DO NOT WANT TO SPEAK SPANISH to us, they want to practice their English and we in return try to practice our Spanish with them.

It might do you some good to read through some of the other threads on this forum and get to know us. then I think you will become to realise that there are not a lot of us who actually think and act the way you have perceived us.

By the way welcome to BE, we are a fun loving bunch who have forgiveness in their hearts.

You can go to bed now MATT, nite nite

Re: Spanish people apologising

Perhaps you ought to re read the thread ... it was not about Brits wanting Spanish shopkeepers to speak english, it was the OP's suprise that the assistant apologised for not speaking English, and they were asking if anyone else had experienced this.

Perhaps you could use your so called intelligence to read my earlier posts properly. You will find that I was speaking in Spanish to the shop assistants. They realised that I was English and tried out their English.

I chose to live in Spain so I am learning the language as I have stated in my earlier post I do not expect people to speak English. In the area that I live the people speak Valencian more than Castellon so I am trying to learn two new languages. There are no FREE lessons here we have to pay for our learning.

Your tirade regarding Social Security has nothing to do with the subject matter of my thread so I do not understand why you felt the need to introduce it.

I find your post insulting and ignorant.

Mitzyboy

I am re-reading the 'whole' post with a view to being stood corrected. It is not beyond me to apologise if I am wrong.

I´ll come back soon.

However, I reserve the option as to how far back I go with posts. I´ll stick to this subject as I can´t be expected to mind-read and search through other posts to guage a person's character, personality or demeanor.

Hear from me soon.

Stephen
