Default Spanish Lottery - Eligibility to claim

Me and my big sis have been saying for ages that we will buy a ticket for El Gordo -the christmas draw. Sis was recently on holiday in Spain, texted me to say "Shall I get a ticket" and I said "yep" so she went and got one - over the counter, a full 10(?) decimo ticket, for 200 euro. We have shared costs on it.

We have both seen sites on the internet selling El Gordo tickets and assumed we were eligible to claim, should we be lucky enough to win anything. But somewhere I saw something that suggested that you have to actually be resident in Spain to claim on a winning ticket, unless that ticket is bought via, say, an internet agency (who do the claiming for you). :scared:

Me and my husband do actually own a property in spain and do have a spanish bank account and NIE number but we aren't resident Would we be eligible to claim if we won? Does anyone know how it works if you do have a winning ticket?

Or are we destined to be like Del and Rodney who had a winning ticket and then couldn't claim on it (although that was because of the painting competion... remember that one?

Hello cindyp,

The short answer to your question is YES you can claim your prize if you are lucky enough to win, the process to claim your prize is a simple one.

You check your winning ticket and if the numbers are winning numbers you take your ticket to your Branch of the bank and present your ticket. The bank checks it and makes a phone call and fax a copy of the winning ticket to the lotto head office in Madrid who confirm the ticket then informs your bank to credit your account with the amount you have won.

I won quite a large amount on the lotto last Christmas (not a huge amount but enought to get the shopping in for a whole year and some left over for prezzies) but I do live in Spain full time.

I do hope this helps you claim your huge prize,

P.S. Dont forget me, will you?
