saint mic i have to stand up for my home island of lanzarote,to dismiss it as a big dump shows lack of knowledge and respect (par for the course from a liverpool fan tho).if you take the time to explore it properly, lanza is infact a fascinating and beautiful island. whats more, unlike ibiza it is a year round island, no waking up thinking you are back in the uk in january because its raining all week.

It's true, Lanzarote is a year round dump. Yes it is sunny all year like all the Canary islands, MAYBE it was just bad luck on my part from the times I've been, but I've never experienced a day on Lanzarote that wasn't so windy I felt like one of the nannies at the start of Mary Poppins.

Perhaps it was just unfortunate timing, but all I've seen of Lanzarote is a haven for mosquitoes, year round hurricane force winds, tacky resorts and the ONE highlight that almost makes the island worth visiting - César Manrique's beautiful lava field house.

Sorry, but that's my honest opinion.

We've been playing 7 a side football every week in the Alicante region for 7 years and now looking to perhaps travel to Ibiza to play a team there - nothing too serious - just a good game and a few bevvies - anyone know any teams that would want a good game - anyone know any cheap accommodation fairly close to the pitch ? </thread drift>

Any help much appreciated.

I don't agree that living and housing in Canary islands is more expensive than in the mainland. I live in Gran Canaria. My 45 m2 apartment is located ~ 50 m from Atlantic ocean (with ocean view) / 5 min drive to the main main tourist resort / 10 minutes drive to the largest hypermarket in the island. I pay EUR 500 (water, electricity, comunidad included). Can you rent a similar apartment for the same price in the mainland? I don't think so.

The food is not expensive at all if you don't make shopping in so called "supermarkets" for tourists. Prices in these "supermarkets" are extremaly high, but there are normal super- and hypermarkets with very low prices.

Canary islands residents get 50% discount when flying to the mainland by Iberia, Spanair or Air Europa etc (only spanish airlines).
I just checked Spanair prices for may 2008. Gran Canaria - Madrid - Gran Canaria flight for residents costs 43.08 EUR (with all taxes). Do you think it's expensive for 3 hours flight?

It's not true that low cost airlines are not flying there. Check the Ryanair's website. This company is flying to Fuerteventura, Tenerife.

All the Canary islands are quite close to each other, so you have Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura all a relatively short ferry trip away. Cost of living and housing is somewhat more expensive than mainland Spain, also flights to and from are much more expensive as there are, to date, none of the 'low cost' airlines flying there, those airlines that do are all holiday charter flights. Cost of living is higher because the vast majority of food etc has to be flown in or come by boat. Have been to all except Tenerife, and they are all touristy as their main source of income is the tourist industry.

Ibiza.

Most of the people you meet are quite rude....even for Catalans; or maybe just our bad luck.

Probably the worst drivers in spain....the most common excuse........"It's not my fault, I didn't see you"

Property prices are extortionate.........€250.000+ for a 3 bedroom apartment, rental of tha same property, around €800 a month.

Weather is absolutely brilliant...min 15 at winter and there's not enough rain !!!!

Cars are expensive to buy..about €3000 for a heap of junk.

Summer time is crazy........wintertime is peacefull, but everywhere closes and most parts of the island become a ghost town.

The Locals think they are allowed to make any money.

No direct flights to the UK over winter.

All in all not an ideal place to live, but a 1000 times better than the UK.

Hi SaintMic,

Perhaps you or someone you know could help ? Anyone know of any Brit expats on Ibiza looking for a friendly 7 a side football match on astro turf at all ? (We've had many years of losing half our knees on asphalt/concrete surfaces in previous lives, so don't need to experience it any more ! ! ! !)

We're a bunch of English mates of all ages and all skill levels, who've played every week for seven years, just south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca, we don't play in any leagues, but would definitely give any team a good, friendly, competitive game of football.

Depending on total costs involved, we're looking at playing on Saturday the 24th of October next year, probably get to Ibiza in the afternoon on the Friday 23rd, and leaving Monday 26th afternoon.

At this stage, we're just at the initial stages, ie, looking at ways and costs of getting there from mainland Spain (Alicante), details and costs of accommodation etc. (Anyone have any ideas on any of this ?)

On top of our usual weekly games on astro turf, we also play against teams visiting from the UK to the Costa Blanca, on average, over the last 7 years, we've played about 4-5 games a year against 7 a side teams from the UK, so would be nice for us to play away for once.

If anyone has any info that could help with any of the above, please let us know.

Any help appreciated.
