Can always rely on the unions to give any attempted economic recovery a kick in the teeth.
At least it's just for the one day.
I'll be surprised if some of the UK unions don't follow suit in a few months time.

I'd agree ... another "winter of discontent" in the UK... I think the 'common man' is sick of being s**t on by the global juggernauts taking what they like / when they like!

Woe is me, the end is nigh!

I’ve just realised, my wife flies back into Alicante on that day, from England. I’m going to pick her up from the airport, does anyone know what disruptions the general strike could cause for airports next Wednesday?

My wife is flying out on Wednesday, and she has just had an email saying that no luggage can be checked in on the flight due to the strike.

Anyone who has paid for luggage will have a refund on the baggage fees, so I think t¡you can take it that the flight will go ahead, but with restriced services ie no luggage check in and possible no food on board.

If the unions and, more importantly, their members, are adversely affected by the reforms and oppose them, then the unions surely have an obligation to protest?

These reforms are not likely to be reversed when the crisis is over. These rights are gone forever.

Problem is that most unions are generally so short-sighted that they rarely see that their short term actions usually have adverse long term effects on their members, as will be the case if they don't co-operate in getting the country back on it's feet or as used to be the case in the UK where repeated strike action for the most petty of reasons often took their companies to the wall.
What evidence do you have to say that any lost rights will be gone for ever?

I think it makes more sense to fight for rights when the economy is more stable, there is one think that will definitely never be restored, and that is lost business. The UK has precious little left in the way of manufacturing infrastructure or car industry for this reason.

quiz time......who was the union leader who called his members out on strike and was deemed to have "started the strike with a big union and a small house, and ended the strike with a small union and a big house!!!"
No prizes for the correct answer.....
