It’s a complicated calculation and very different from the way it works in the UK. Allowances only apply to the basic tax rate and result in a tax deduction from the tax due, rather than reducing the income before tax.

It’s difficult to work out on the back of an envelope. It’s much easier to run the PADRE tax program to work it out. There are some basic tax simulators that use the official way of calculating it.
