Default Spanish Guardia at French and Portuguese borders

I read in our local paper (Voz de Galicia) that the Spanish Guardia are putting patrols on the borders with Portugal and France. The intention is to stop foreign plated vehicles (entering and leaving Spain) and to check the vehicle is road legal in the country of registration. Not sure how serious but people should make sure that they have all their documentation for their vehicle with them. Have a feeling that this is aimed at UK registered vehicles. You have been warned!

Hola
The Guardia ran similar checks for cars going into Gibraltar some time ago - their theory was that you should be legal to cross the border so they checked you had a green card insurance for example.

Green card insurance is not a requirement - it simply extends your UK insurance cover. All insurances issued in the EU must include pan-Europe 3rd party risks cover. So as long as you have got an insurance policy then you will be street legal. Mind you, you would be daft to rely on that and not have the extra cover anyway.

"Johnny Foreigner hates us because we are British !" says the Jingo.

Those whose ideas and prejudices are reinforced by the Sun, The Mail and tabloid TV have a very odd view of the world.

I suppose it depends what they are looking for? It may have been specific to Spanish / French vehicles or people etc.

Don't get paranoid! The GC trafico are 'thematic' Policing. The theme for a good while has been vehicle condition, including documentation. In respect of Spanish reg. vehicles the ANPR system (Number plate recognition) can identify vehicles not ITV'd or Insured, so they can be targeted and best use of resources made. Spain also has a high / severe terror alert, which is intelligence led and criminals travel by vehicles etc. Hope this helps, its not just the Brits!
