Default Spainish New Car Costs

My wife and I are looking to purchase a property in Estepona and live permanently in Spain, I have been looking at cars and more specifically Mercedes, I have followed the online configurator on the Spanish site and the costs are coming out almost 50-60% more expensive than the UK,am I missing something here or is this the norm..?

Sorry I cannot speak for Mercedes. We bought a new Toyota CHR in May 2017 here in Bizkaia for €28,000 and looking at Toyota UK prices January 2020 for comparison, they are much the same. I've a feeling that Spanish prices used to be dearer but I reckon things are more equal now. Second hand prices in Spain always seem dearer to me than UK, & not just for cars but I think that's because the UK has more choice. There is more price-fixing here than the UK, though I don't know if that is for cars as well.
If you buy in the UK, the choice of LHD is limited. I wouldn't recommend driving a RHD vehicle in Spain.

Secondhand is more expensive because there aren't that many around, Spanish owners tend to run their cars into the ground, and, of course there are far fewere rust problems because they just don't use the salt on the roads, especially in the Costas.

It will always depend what type of model but many Germans seem to also complain that car prices in Spain are higher, so they just buy in Germany. Of course they don't have the problem with RHD.

I don't know which model or where you are looking?

A quick google would show Mercedes is cheaper in Spain.

Mercedes Dealer UK list price for A class starts at £23,710 and the exchange rate today is 1.18 and that would be 27,978€ @ https://www.arnoldclark.com/new-cars/mercedes-benz
Mercedes Dealer Spain list price for A class starts at 26,140€ @ Concesionario Mercedes-Benz en Alicante | HM.Crespo

At the end of the day the differences can be huge from dealer to dealer. On Autotrader you might always find something cheaper.

There is a good reason why that particular car could be more expensive than in the UK. It has an emission level in the highest registration, tax band of 14.75%. The same car in the UK would have a flat rate tax of £55. That would make a difference of over €7000

I looked a buying a Lhd, in Spain. Prices were just too much. I bought a second hand Mercedes B class, the equivalent in Spain similar mileage etc was 7000€ more. Matriculated mine, cost was 900€.
much better value.

Yes, I have bought 5 new cars in Spain and they were all cheaper than in the UK. However fire breathing petrol AMG Mercs may be different, as I said, because of the penal registration tax on “gas guzzlers “.

Registration tax varies enormously from one country to another. You can take advantage of this. I know a Norwegian who bought a Merc in Denmark as an export. The tax is so high there that Mercedes subsidise the prices to keep sales high. As a result the tax free price is comparatively low. Yes, you still pay the top rate of tax in Spain when you import it but it still works out as a big saving.
