My outgoings are certainly much cheaper than they would have been in the UK. I prefer the lifestyle here also.

But there are more people moving down here which in turn generates more opportunity of making money. But most of my work is generated overseas, so I get paid in sterling, or dollars and get the best of both worlds, so I guess I'm lucky in that I get the best of both worlds.

Anyway if you go back to UK, best of luck.

it might of been 50g cheaper, but at what real cost ? its cheaper to live here. i dont think so, i think shopping, comparing like for like, u would be paying more in spain. i´m not saying buy heinz beans and that, i mean...if u bought the same equivilent item from say, mercadona. do they sell value items in mercadona ? is there a "savers" range in supersol ? how can it possibly be cheaper in spain ?

mobile phone signal, in the uk there is 100% coverage over 100% of the uk. whats the percentage in spain? you´ve only got to go 30km inland and the signal breaks up, u cant send text messages all the time and u cant even get a normal telephone in the campo...

mobile telephone costs. a text message to the uk costs 52 cents. from the uk to spain it costs 10p, or even free with companies like ...well..all of them if u have the right tarif.

wages. for equivilent jobs, the wages in spain are much lower. eg, bar work. u r looking at about 6€ per hour here in spain, and about 7.50per hour in the uk..

i agree mercades, houses may be cheaper (well they were when this thread started, now i think that the prices are equalising ), but in effect, over the years that people live here they are paying a hell of alot more for what in effect is the kind of life that the people in the uk had in the 80´s and 90´s. everything seems to be, ..i dunno..not as far advanced. i know we have, or we can buy all the good computers and the mobile fones, but they just do not have the infastructure to back it up. look outside, i bet your new 4-core telefone extension goes into the telefone connetcion box, and comes out and goes into a two core 30 year old cable. although up to date computers are avaliable, look at the prices being paid for them. yes u can buy a brand new camera fone. but it´ll cost u near on €300 and a call will cost €3 a time - look in the uk, they are practically giving the phones away with a weeks worth of free calls and a gazillion free texts per month.

how long is it going to take spain to catch up with the technological advances of the uk ?

I think he's giving the benefit of experience having been living there for a while. I've moved on from Spain but tend to agree with a lot of his comments. I lived there for two years and wouldn't even go back for a short visit now.

I'd add that utility bills are a lot more expensive than England and you don't have the benefit of deferring payment for a couple of weeks. They come straight out of your account on seemingly random days and if you're lucky you'll get the bill relatively soon after the event.

I agree with you - we've only been here 9 months but have had several electricty & water bills - much lower than in UK - even using the central heating in the winter with gas bottles that still worked out less than in UK

In winter I paid about 300 Euros every two months for electricity and my water bill was huge. I wasn't on metered water in London.

Hi Sibsie, where did you live in Spain? I've been living down between Marbella and Estepona for a little over two years. It's on the coast so is more expensive than up in the hills (campo) but is still 30% cheaper than in Wiltshire (Swindon) and the standard of living doesn't start to compare with the chaos in UK (travel, council charges, weak government etc. etc.)

I have seen some ex-pat webs here in Spain where it must be hell to live: Costa Blanca where Brits are afraid to leave their Community at night and the talk is all about break-ins and changing locks and fitting safes, or Valencia where the only talk is about Brit Estate Agents ripping off Brits looking for property and they are all panicking about the 'land grab', although it only affects about 1% who bought without any serious checks.

It's been said before here and on many other web sites, if you avoid the obvious tourist traps and go where the locals go, you will enjoy life more and get more bang for the buck. It's all down to being aware and using a little common sense. If you haven't got any of this, then go somewhere else where the State will look after you.

I appreciate Brits are a winging lot, especially at home, but the vast majority here on the CdS settle in well and have a ball; that's why they came here. Life returns what you put into it - nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I had a bigish three bedroom place so the bills would have been more than for an apartment or smaller villa. Electricty was my only heating other than a wood stove and you really do need heating in winter. My bills were in line with everyone else in the area and not excessively high compared to neighbours and friends in the area.

Scotinspain...

I lived in a village about 11ks from Javea. Javea is very British and becoming over developed which is one of the reasons I chose to live away from Javea. There is a high crime rate and I haven't met anyone there who hasn't been the victim of crime from minor petty crime to the big stuff. Crime seems to be a problem across Spain though and is worse in places like Mardid and Barcelona.

Some people love living in Spain, some people don't. I didn't like it at all. I hated the expat life and found the other Brits gossipy and petty. I socialised mainly with South Americans who were living there and Dutch people. But life moves on and I'm happily settled in the US now.

Hi Sibsie, I think you were unfortunate to pick one of the worst areas to live in Spain. I visited the Coata Blanca three years ago when I was upgrading from a 'flat to let' on the CdS to a property to LIVE in. When I said I was visiting the CB for 4 days to have a look, both my Spanish and English friends were very surprised and warned me against it.....I returned after two days! The noise and squaler were unbearable. I was not aware of the crime rate then, but any local expat web site now talks about this, to the virtual exclusion of all else. At least you had the sense and funding to get out.

I did not realise the mark up in utility cost there. On the CdS the electricity prices took a 40% hike this year, but they are still 50-65% lower than what you were paying. My 3 bed, 3 floor townhouse electricity bill is about 115 Euros a month, a bit less in the winter as I also have a woodburner. The Community buy water in bulk and it costs me about 12 Euros a month (for 3 people).

I have friends (English gent married to a Spanish wife) living in Barcelona and a Spanish family living in Madrid and they both say they are nice places to live provided you know the places to avoid. A bit like London or larger cities in USA!

I hope others will not take your example as typical, but it does confirm the requirement to LOOK AROUND before shelling out real cash.

I live where Sibsie used to live - yes it's quite an expensive area in comparison with many other areas - but it is still cheaper than living in UK

where did you go - I don't recognise where I live at all - especially the noise & squalor

yes, there is crime - but no more so than in a lot of other areas, and in the quiet town I lived in in UK - and a lot of it is because people let their guards down - you wouldn't leave your front door wide open while you were in the back garden in the UK - so why do so many do exactly that here? Women put their handbags on the the supermarket trolley and walk away from it, or leave it on the floor in a restaurant - would they really do that in UK???

yes, my dh had his pocket picked - but I have been pick pocketed in UK twice, and have had 3 burglaries too - all in quite ordinary towns.

another board I visit had a post from a man who lives in Weston-Supermare - he compared crime figures in his own town with those in Torrevieja where he was thinking of buying a holiday home. Torrevieja is reputedly the 'crime capital' of the Costa Blanca.
guess which town had the highest crime figures - including violent crime???

hint..............not Torrevieja

yes i have thought about it, the house goes on the market as soon as my parents residencia comes through (hah..like thats gonna be soon, its already about 6 weeks over due) and we are currently looking at moving a coastal area of the cadiz region.

no offense taken, its a fair comment, but, if you read my other post you will see that unfortunatly i have outlined the costs involved in living in spain, not the costs for this region.

technically i dont hate spain as a whole, the spanish people seem really nice. its the foriegners, the english taking advantage, the morocans and pikey gypsy spanish taking the oppertunity to rob the english at every oppertunity, the spanish police using the fact that the english are english as a reason to punish them...the heat.. well..i just dont go out when its really hot

thankyou sibsie, i know you cant take my side, but at least you recognise that you know where i´m coming from. (i´ve been in spain for just under 5 years now, btw) . you unfortunatly must of had it worse than us, as you have also been robbed a few times as well. i guess we´ve been lucky in that, even tho we live in an un-desirable area, we haven´t been targeted. (touch wood)

thats another good point, that in the uk they understand that people dont have as much disposable income as they need straight away and will let you defer payment, if you try that in spain the red letter comes then u are cut off a few days later.

its also true that you can have no sort of direct debit set up, as you dont know when the money has to be avaliable to the account to pay a bill, and not all of us have a thousand pounds in reserve for that event.
