SOUTHERN SPAIN

Hi
Myself, partner and 2 little girls are discussing the idea of moving to Spain - we would like to get an apartment in Southern spain but not sure what the areas are like ? Please can I have some advice on where the nicer areas are and where to try and avoid
Thanks
:)

Re: SOUTHERN SPAIN

Not a bad idea if you define precisely what you mean by nice. One man's nice is another's hell.

Perhaps you could start by giving us a few pointers regarding what you are after:

Town v village v city v out in the sticks?
Lots of foreign tourists or not?
Coastal v inland?

What is it you are looking for?

Ideally we would like to be near the sea but if need be then we are happy to live in a village / complex etc not far from the sea.
We were looking to go outskirts of Marbella or the other end to Torrocks (I think thats what its called )?

I would like to know where are the better areas and where are the horrible areas to avoid (if any )?

I have seen many people going back withing the last six months due to lack of work, all bar one, couples with children, not many Brits here but we have lost a lot.
Think hard before you do, as much as I love it here, you do need to think about health care etc etc:)

I hate to say this, but although we can tell you what we feel is nice, you really wont be able to tell yourself without coming here and looking for yourself. I spent well over a year visiting and looking at areas before I moved here, did a lot of research, and 5 years on I am perfectly happy with where we chose.

I would definately advise rent first. Then if you do make a horrible mistake you can put it right.

Marbella, as I understand it, is fairly pricy
Hope you have researched work, if indeed you need it

Agree 100%, did the same ,spent almost a year ,worth the wait and then had a fair idea what I And my wife were doing when it came to buying a property .When I think back some of the crap We were led to believe when I first arrived so glad we didn't pay a lot of heed. For every good piece of advice you get you will get a hundred bad ones ,you need to find out for yourself .

I think that the most important advice would be this.

Don't ignore advice just because it doesn't agree with what you want to do. Sometimes the people who point out the problems are actually your best friends, even if you don't like what they say.

Well, that kinda defines where you'll be living: close to where you (or your partner) works. If you can tell us where that is - i.e. which town he/she will be working in, people here might be able to advise you on where the decent schools & facilities are, where crime is low and where houses are cheap.
p.s. You won't find a place that fits all three of those criteria - at best you'll find two, but will probably only get one!

Yes we are researching into it and will be visiting different areas very soon.
Yes Marbella is very pricey that is why we are looking to go outskirts where it is slightly cheaper
