Some info on Gibraltar?
Hello All,
Just wanted to say hello really and try to get some replies from people living/working on Gib. I have recently return to the UK after several years of living and working in Australia and New Zealand. Having been here for a few months now, I have come to the conclusion it aint for me! Probably something to do with the lovely sub-tropical climate of Cardiff. So, the point being, I have decided to give Gibraltar a go! I have a little knowledgeable of the area having visited several times as a child (my Father worked there quite a bit during my childhood). I have booked a month in temporary accommodation, so I can look for an apartment and attend some interviews etc I have set up already. Perhaps somebody could give me some advice regarding job vacancies. From my research so far, there seems to be several DOZEN (exaggeration) all advertising the same jobs. Although I have contacted a few of them and discussed some positions and set up some meetings, I really don't like dealing with/going through agencies. I had a look on-line and fond some references to the 'Job Centre', but little or no more than that. Are there any job boards/local publication that advertise job vacancies? Any advice regarding this or anything else related would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm a big Rugby fan (not surprisingly, being born in Wales and spending most of my adult life in NZealand). Any rugby clubs/teams, bars that show games. I suppose I can watch most game I want to on-line, but there's nothing like watching with a beer in your hand with someone to argue with! Cheers! |
Re: Some info on Gibraltar?

Hi and welcome
Yes this is the right area to post. What made you decide to leave the antipodes ? I would rather be there but it's now too late in life for me. Your idea of booking a month here is the perfect way to approach your move, get arround the businesses knock on doors and show your face. The Job Centre is mediocre at the best. Civil servants who consider work to be a four letter word. What are you looking for? Re: Some info on Gibraltar?
Hi Fred,
Thanks for your reply and links. The other half and I had a falling out, which, in such situations, generally requires one of us changing continents!;)... No, joking aside, I got a little tired of all the moving around, and had not been back home for quite a few years. My plans were to have a few years back in the UK and perhaps move back to Aus/NZ. I just underestimated how much I disliked the lifestyle. Gib seemed to be the obvious choice. Weather, lifestyle, the language and its still close enough to fly home in a few hours. Down there, I've been working in the insurance industry, loss adjusting within the building claims sector to be more precise. I understand there isn't a lot of call for that sort of thing in Gib, but I figured there are a lot of transferable skills and from what I've found out, there is a lot of marine insurance work there. Besides that a have a sales and marketing background I can fall back on if needed. I've a few meetings lined up within the gaming industry, not that its perfect, but there you go! Fred, perhaps you cant help with this? am I right in thinking you need to be employed before you can apply for a tax number (or SI number, however its referred to), but you need a Tax number or 'ID' card to use the employment service. The government on-line literature is extremely confusing and contradictory. |

The government on-line literature is extremely confusing and contradictory. Unfortunately they do not always have the skills required, so you have conflicting advice. So long as you have an address and someway for a prospective employer to contact you the rest will fall into place. There is a lot of insurance work done in Gib, I believe a major part of UK vehicle insurance is now done from here, Also Gib insures a lot of property in Spain and Portugal so there maybe work in that area. |
Re: Some info on Gibraltar?
I've contacted a few Insurance companies already. It surprised me how helpful they were, even though they had nothing suitable, pretty much all of them offered advice or contacts for potential openings with other companies. Nothing like the big companies in Australia or the UK mainland, who wouldn't give you a nod in the desert let alone reply if you didn't have something they wanted.

Re: Some info on Gibraltar?
I'm not a big drinker, I don't have a local. But when I fancy one it is usually in the Wateport area, Watergardens where there is a fair number of of pubs. Just returned from a quick one there this afternoon.
Drop me a PM when you arrive and we will swap mobile numbers. |
Re: Some info on Gibraltar?
Well been in Gib around a week now. Im impressed by the number of public holidays! Maybe I should have looked into that before booking the dates.
