I WILL leave Spain if this happens.

For me, it is simply about freedom of choice. Forget the health arguments, and the revenue/economic arguments. Forget the fact that all governments for many years encouraged the promotion of tobacco companies.

There is a very simple solution - let the bars/restaurants chose whether they want to allow smoking, or not. Then, all of us can simply chose a smoking, or non-smoking place.

I fully understand (and agree with) any ban on smoking in other public places and work places, but bars and restaurants should be exempt if they so wish.

I agree with free people doing whatever they want unless they impact the others by their behavior. Let's not forget there are laws that restrict the I do whatever I want style.
I prefer the company of happy smokers, if we’re outside, to those miserable people, especially recently reformed smokers, who bang on about it incessantly.
That means the non-smokers are on the verge of a nervous breakdown
And if you worry about someone’s smoky breath, there’s half the world that you can’t visit, not because of the smoking, but because breath is more adversely affected by what people eat.
You know I wasn't talking about bad breath but the smoke which is totally unhealthy and I think everybody should choose whether they would like to inhale it or not
good

I think it will be a while before you need to pack your bags, but keep them handy, it will happen.

I grew up in a household with a smoking alcoholic and believe me, it wasn't smoking that did the most damage to the family. I would have gladly inhaled the secondhand smoke all day long if the alcohol had been banished. By the way, before someone accuses me of being a smoker, I don't smoke or drink.

Disagree It would create problems meeting friends in restaurants when with kids etc , its extremely selfish and bad mannered to smoke in a restaurant when others are eating even when its legal

Poison yourself and your family at home by all means but dont force it on others!

As a smoker, I don't smoke after a meal if I'm in the company of non-smokers, children, or simply in a non-smoking environment.

Generally, the people I eat out with are smokers. Very common for a family Sunday meal to end with cigars and smokes here.

If the health freaks want a smoke free meal, they can go poison themselves at McDonalds

I see absolutely no problem in allowing people to chose between non-smoking bars, smoking bars, or bars with smoke free rooms and smoking areas. You want a smoke free family meal - you go to the smoke free option. Simple.

The solution is even simpler. Create special rooms for smokers.

Erm, they've already done that.

That was the last law they implimented in Spain 5 years ago! Bars and restaurants have to have a seperated well ventilated room for smokers unless they are under 100m2, then they have to choose to be smoking or not and clearly signpost it

No offence, Cman, but your post really made me laugh. Thanks for that.

I can imagine you shouting out your rude words to your non-understanding English neighbours every time they light a fag, and them thinking that you don’t understand English and shouting back:

“You xxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxx, xxxx xxx!”

Site rules forbid me to use the real words, not that I use them much anyway.

It should be on Monty Python. (Or was it already?)

People don't stay home & not socialise just because of a smoking ban. In the UK people like to blame the smoking ban, but the real reason for pub closures is the ridiculous amount of tax that's charged on alcohol. It's simply too expensive to go out every night anymore.

In bygone days blokes would go out for a couple just to have a bit of piece & quiet and not be forced into watching hours & hours of soap operas with the wife. Today we get a cheap 24 pack from the supermarket & sit watching our very own sky multiroom.

A smoking ban in Spain will have negligible effect on a bar where most people sit outside anyway.

I spoke to a couple of Spanish bar owners the last time the threat of a smoking ban was around and they both said that they'd ignore it, but if pushed they'd close their bars and only let in those who wanted to come in??! Something like that. If its not open to the public, its not considered a public place and therefore the rules dont apply.

I work in an English Cafe and we're no smoking inside. I've been there for two weeks and so far I've had no less than six groups of Spanish people coming in, asking if they can smoke inside, when I've said sorry no, they've walked out again! For the life of me I cant understand what all the fuss is about either way! Altho I think freedom of choice is being taken away, the government should get on with sorting out their financial messes and stop worrying about something as insignificant as smoking! More people die, are injured or maimed by alcohol than fags

That's right, look in any town/village and pubs have been closed. But years ago you couldn't buy beer in the supermarket/garage or wherever, if you wanted beer, you had to go to the pub. Same with films, you had to go to the cinema, now it's cheaper to hire one and stay at home and watch in the comfort of your own home. I don't know of anyone that smokes that has stopped going to pubs. We popped into Witherspoons yesterday, absolutely heaving, the no smoking is not putting anyone off. Reading their brochure, something like 15 of their new pubs opened in the last few weeks, they have nearly 800 pubs now, if you give people what they want at an affordable price, smoking or not, they'll fill the places.
