Oh well ... one of the local bars I go to the bar is just inside the door and opposite the toilet, and the restaurant is to the rear open plan. So everyone has to walk through the smoke to go wherever they want to. The designated area appears to be the whole bar!
Was the menu salads and healthy options ? or maybe they consider at nightimes kiddies should be in bed ? See them Spanish they know what there doing  eviva el spania :) |
Re: Smoking ban
Pwblackbelt, where are you living at the moment and have you spent much time in Spain. The reason I ask this is the national pastime here in Spain IS SMOKING. Like practically every Spaniard is puffing away for their country, most of the ventas that are local to me are less than 100 m2 and when the doors open it is like going back to London in the late 19th early 20th century, smogsville is the name. I know the laws are changing re smoking and I add I'm not a smoker and I applaud them but I have a feeling that the people of Spain will continue to do what they do best and that is ignore the rules and live for today. It is very hard to get away from smoke here and there are many shops now banning it but I fear it will be a while yet before it catching on in rural areas.

All I asked though was there a smoking ban, nothing more or nothing less. People can do what they like I do not care what others do as long as it does not have to involve me. They can go and smoke 1 million cigs a day, chew baccy and puff on a pipe all at the same time, I don't care. But you won't do it in my house, my Gym, my Bar, my car, my boat, my private jet (kiding on that one). I also agree that a pub is not for kids. You can have fun pubs and have kids running around etc fine, but in a proper pub with darts, pool tables and sports on the widescreen tv there should not be anyone under 18 years of age. However if I came and picked my nose then wiped it on your jacket just cos you were in the same room as me you wouldn't be happy would you. i have walked into a room where someone was smoking, I was in there for less than 1 minute and when I walked out I was stinking, it is disgusting. That person probably washed their clothes before going to work but their cigarette still made a horrible smell and made me smell horrible. In less than 1 minute. So not washing is not a valid argument. On top of that after watching someone waste away and die from lung cancer in front of my eyes because they smoked all the time kinda puts me off. If I gave you a spoonful of cyanide, would you drink it? If I was running around a room with a spoonful of cyanide, would you like to be standing near me? Did you know that cyanide is one of the ingredients in a cigarette? Who wants their daily dose of cyanide guys? Rool up roll up come and get it??? |

I have been there a few times but the last time I went there was to fight for the European Kickboxing title. The entire country seemed to be smoking, even some of the guys that were fighting, I couldn't believe it.

As I said I don't smoke, and I agree with much of what you are saying, the one thing that really pi***d me off when I was in UK and travelling to work was, I would be sitting or standing waiting for the bus/train and I would be on my own with room around me and the smoker always came up and sat or stood right next to me puffing away I would always have to move away. I suffer from asthma and if there is a chest infection going then being me I have to have it and I'm always so much worse than the person who kindly gave it to me. |
Re: Smoking ban
The only sign of the new smoking laws I have seen is that you now have to ask the barman to press the button on a sort of car alarm key fob thingy before the cig machine will work.
What amuses me is the "No Smoking" sign on the door of the local tabaconists:ohmy: I have yet to see the same "no Smoking" sign on any Spanish bar door, no matter how many sq mts it occupies. |
Re: Smoking ban
The little button they press is to moniter who is buying cigs as you have to be 18 to buy them in spain.I know the barmaid in the bar I was in looked a bit p----d off having to keep pressing while doing a thousand other jobs.I have to admire these barmen/women [spanish] talk about hard working they are never still. here in england if you interupt them having a convasation between themselves they give you that WHAT look.

Crispygirl, go to Venta Florentina in Pago. Definitely no smoking there in the eating part and people keep to it.

So, if you own the bar of any size and want to have "NO SMOKING" are you allowed to do that?
Unfortunately, a number of regional governments (eg Valencia, Madrid) have taken it on themselves to tinker with the basic legislation as far as certain of the deadlines for adapting premises and the degree of physical separation of the smoking areas are concerned. The national government has challenged these local modifications and time will tell as to what happens next. |

If this upsets anyone let me know and I will remove it. I am sure every smoker is aware that the chances of Lung cancer is possible , in the same way George Best knew that once he knackered his 1st Liver he should stop drinking !! But its very funny that dispite even the high profile George Best drinking saga , that rules on drinking actually get less ? And as i have stated before Smokers pay for the Hospital bed 20 times so leave them alone  You know the biggest drain on the NHS and Social system is the Fat people so why dont we have a few signs saying "NO EATING" |

Obviously a very interesting question with a lot of different points of view. I will be in Benalmadena soon to look around and see what is what. Hopefully see myself a nice little empty commercial unit to rent out.A NO SMOKING facility obviously (LOL) I was in York at the weekend and found a non smoking bar selling real ale (which I am not too keen on) plus beers from around Europe which we sampled. I asked the bar man if it was busy as the other bars and he said exactly the same as anywhere else. It was my birthday so we sampled quite a few beers before moving onto a haunted pub. Didn't see any ghosts though. Had a great day and night though. Feel a bit rough today though. See you all in Benalmadena very soon.  |
