Are they really necessary in a house where no-one smokes and seldom cooks?

They sure are. Electrical wiring / appliances are a common cause of domestic fires. Its also worth bearing in mind that with the high levels of security in many spanish properties, ie grills on windows and doors, escaping from the building could, in some cases be a cause for concern. So the sooner you are alerted to any potential problem, the better.

I was quite surprised that our rented apartment didn't come with a smoke alarm.....I guess I am used to "Health & Safety England" with all its laws and regulations.....

I have had a few smoky moments when cooking - when normally the smoke alarm back in England would definitely have gone off....but here I just open the front door and try and waft the air....:D

A canary is ok if you work down a mine.
