I always miss Boots when in Spain, or Superdrug. Somewhere to browse around and find all those health and beauty products I didn't know I needed. Suprised Superdrug didn't open in Spain as the owners were always at my Aunts bowls club on the CDS.

Heh. I currently use Greggs more than I should. But considering the amount of pig based tapas you sometimes get with your drink, the one thing I didn't really miss in Madrid (although I thought I would) was the sausage roll. And the empanada was a better substitution, I thought, than the Greggs pastries.

Sat here for a few minutes trying to think of a shop and have struggled to come up with one. In the early days I could probably thought of a few but now it is different. The only shops that are coming to mind is "Works" for their prices and giant craft shops but then again our house is so full of "crafty" things that I guess we could open one ourselves.

Take one empanada, wipe out the oven with it, marinade in grease for two weeks, heat and serve.

Now that is beyond my comprehension.

TK Maxx - I love rummaging around to find a bargain! Sadly on my last visit to the UK I was disappointed but hope they will be back on form in December.

As for Greggs, you must be kidding! They are certainly cheap, but rubbish. Now Greenhalgh's (a chain of bakers shops only found in the North West AFAIK), now you're talking! Meat pies, potato cakes .... oh stop it, why am I torturing myself?

They do nice sandwiches - unheard of in Spain.

I've had fantastic sandwiches in Madrid (and far better quality than Greggs). I agree they are not widespread though, and outside a decent sized town probably hard to find.

Yes, I suppose I'm basing my sandwich opinion on what we can get around here and Spain is a big country. Here if you want a ham sandwich you get bread and er.. ham.:( There seems to be no imagination or creativity at all. I'm prepared to believe that you can get a decent sandwich somewhere in Spain. But Greggs is everywhere in the UK...

This place is very popular in the cities. Funnily enough I never liked the place as they seemed expensive (like Pret a Manger is in England), and besides I could find better sandwiches as a free tapa in certain Madrid bars.
