Shops + Shopping

Hi

I thought I'd start a new thread... never done it before! Yes me the guy that loved the old single thread! Well the mods have finally converted the 'old dinosaur':)

This is a post about some warnings - but I thought it would work for general shopping info as well.

We love to nose around the 'cheap shops' that sell everything from electrical goods - kitchen stuff - clothes etc. We have several in Ayamonte and surrounding areas as you will all know.

However we've had a few bad experiences - with products bought from them. E.g :

1) An electrical power multi-socket and surge protector - blew up and started burning. It was behind a wooden sideboard and we were extremely lucky to be there at the time

2) We came to stay after a couple of months away - and noticed that there was a yellow fungus on some our clothes + a very 'musty' smell. It had spread in the wardrobe. Luckily all washed out OK - though we had to wash everything + Disinfect all the surfaces of the wardrobe. We noticed that the fungus was only on the wooden hangers bought at one of these shops and seemed to have originated from the join in the wood. All other hangers were fine. We threw them away.

3) We heard last year that some people had bought shoes (in France from one of these shops). One guy was on the TV - his foot ruptured somehow and he was in a wheelchair for months. Some chemical in the shoe. Horrible.

4) Now Markets (Something we enjoy eg the great Castro Marim market - 2nd Saturday of the month; Cacela 3rd Sunday of the month and Ayamonte - weekly) : If you buy any clothes from the markets wash them separately - the colours can run.

I'm not suggesting that people stop using these shops - or the markets. and we would not eg buy shoes from there, but wanted to raise a red flag.

Sometimes its worth to pay a 'few bob' more for quality products - like electrical stuff etc.

Have fun doing retail therapy!

Jon

'tenuous' - thats a bit hard!

In Portugal the supermarkets are open Sundays - but depends what time you arrive.

Also the supermarket just down from Topix, by the water is open Sundays I think

Hi Jon aka T REX !!

Yes...I bought a beach dress which was a very pale lemon and threw it in the wash with everybodies "whites" (there were 6 of us).

I ruined an expensive "sailing" shirt, several new t shirts, my s-i-l's beautiful white blouse...........and a stack of underwear.

They all said not to worry - between gritted teeth !!

The electrical fault is very worrying and what a pain that wooden hangers would cause all that trouble.

BTW just been "speaking" to wi'kd and meeting up, you out again soon ?

Warning:

RE: electrical multi-plugs.

We also bought one of these sockets from "one of those shops" in ayamonte.
Ours popped and started smelling like burning. Luckily we were home.

Don't go there!!

If you just want some fresh milk (and some basics) to have a cup of tea to tide you over till the morning then try stopping at the Olhao Services - or even the Ayamonte Services (except they don't have fresh milk only UHT).
