Severe weather warning
The Spanish Met Office has just issued a severe weather warning for parts of Eastern Spain, particularly Valencia and Murcia.
They are forecasting a DANA, often called "A Cold Drop" with thunderstorms and very heavy rain. http://www.aemet.es/documentos_d/enp...5_p52tesp1.pdf Time to get your cushions in! |
Re: Severe weather warning
Thanks Fred.
Here up north, looks as if we will be spared that. It seems an increasing phenomenon for certain areas in Spain to suffer huge amounts of rainfall in a very short period. Recently we were in southern Navarra and saw the damage in the area around Tafalla, where they had 200l in an hour, about 3 months ago. Unbelievable. Cars swept away, tractors too, not to mention huge trees (chopos/black poplars) uprooted like matchsticks. I guess any rain is welcome in Murcia, but not all at once. |
Re: Severe weather warning
It’s almost always on the East coast. Very occasionally you get a minor one on the south coast eastern end. It’s a well established weather phenomenon which always happens at roughly the same time. It can be devastating. It’s worth Googling it.

Re: Severe weather warning
A damp squib here.
A thunderstorm with moderate rainfall, certainly nothing to get excited about. |

Re: Severe weather warning
The warning was out for today as well. At the moment the Balearics seem to be getting plenty of rain.
The forecast was spot on in terms of where it would rain, but forecasting the quantity is much more hit and miss. |
Re: Severe weather warning
Well it made up for it at about 4 this afternoon.
Coming out of Orihuela Vega Baja hospital was faced with a ferocious wind driving inch diameter hailstones virtually horizontally giving way to torrential rain. |

Re: Severe weather warning
It is very frightening. We took a detour from our usual route from Bilbao to Almunecar to see the sights of Cartagena. My god the motorway yesterday afternoon was terrible and last night in Cartagena the storm all night non stop, never heard or seen anything like it. I just hope all the people in Murcia and above stay safe. The power of nature...

Re: Severe weather warning
We were woken up at 6.30 am this morning by the storm a round us which i have never experienced before.Continues rolling thunder, like a military artillery barrage, continues sheet and forked lighting, once again the rain fall was phenomenal. at the moment another calm, i have just backwashed the pool again. After this experience this morning my thoughts are with all the people who are suffering because of this storm. I think were about to get another downpour.

Re: Severe weather warning
I was woken up at 6:00 am by a strange noise coming from the aircon unit in my bedroom.
Eventually I realised it was from the water drain pipe in the aircon which takes a tortuous route and was air blowing up the drain pipe. The sound was the gurgling of air passing through the water in level sections of this pipe, a first. No rain but a vicious wind. |

Why do you backwash the pool and not just empty it to waste?

Re: Severe weather warning
I have been in Spain nearly 20 years and never heard thunder or seen lightening like we had this morning at 6 am (just north-west of Alicante city) truly biblical and to be honest frightening as I am in a new (to me) house but the flat roof drained well and now you would think we are living in a different world with the sun coming through. More forecast for next weekend.
Stay safe everyone, don't take risks with cars etc and watch the forecasts to be prepared. |
Re: Severe weather warning
It is the worst since 1987. 5 killed so far and it's now heading for Madrid.

Re: Severe weather warning
Pictures on my facebook are showing some real devastation in Costa Blanca South round the Campoamour area with huge amounts of water and some businesses being washed away. We lived at Playa Flamenca, and some pictures from the shopping centre there show a number of problems. The big problem seems to be that many of the natrual run off dry water courses have been built on, so they act a bit like dams.

Re: Severe weather warning
Yes the amount of building in that zone (I lived there years ago) is totally excessive and so all that tarmac and concrete mean the rain quickly becomes a river and flows to the lowest points causing devastation en route.
